Jazz comes in many forms - classical jazz, progressive jazz, improv jazz, New Orleans jazz, Chicago style...Jazz is very individualistic and pushes the talent and ability of the musician or vocalist to express the music in a creative style.
This probably didn't help answer your question. But I think it takes time to develop an appreciation for it and someone shouldn't judge whether it's 'good' or 'bad' without knowing the style of jazz being heard and there may be other forms which are more easily appreciated.
jazz is a lot like silky's life experience.
trying to stay alive each day.
remembering to inhale and not forgetting to exhale.
spit or swallow?
all about choices and improv!
you gotta improvise right?
'a day in the life of silky'
minor blues in d
so you ran out of toilet paper and dont have money to get a new roll.
what does silky do?
(sax solo) skeet-boppidy-bah-bah-deeeeeeeeh
use the tumb.
havent had a meal in a couple of days?
(trumpet solo) waaaaaay-oh-waaaaaaaaaaay-oh-daaaaaaaaeeeeeeaaaaaay
street cats beware!
havent had a conversation with a real life person in months (online dont count, skippy!)
(drum solo) skeepitty-bam-boodlee-dam-va-va-va-vhooooooooooooom
(vocal ends on a maj/min 9th
with a trembling vibrato reminiscing of her 4th abortion/coke withdrawal period)
'a dead rat shooooooooo is a great listeneeeeeeeeeeer'
improv, baby.
thats jazz.
silky?
makes coltrane and miles look like 2 bitt, no-good, hang-wire-hoe-beatin' pimps!
oh yeah? well, let me ask you this: shut up!
contemporary china = crouching tension, hidden anger.

still, your sorry ass wont understand.
basically, you's a hoe.
try saying it, singing it, it dont matter.
you's a hoe.

singing to her best friend, lover, mother, teacher...
also known as the common street rat...)
'a dead rat shooooooooo is a great listeneeeeeeeeeeer'
if i could only keep insulting her without addressing her directly...
oh wait!
yes i can!
silky's soooooooo fat!
how fat is she?
when she puts on a belt, she ties one end to a boomerang,
throws it with all her strength
and waits about an hour for it to make the full orbit around her nasty, dong bei body.

Your poem is vivid,as is your live show.Just don't change the name to be me.
It is not hard at all to imagine what a harsh man you are.So who cares what a dog says.: )
nah, man.
thats wrong.
plenty of talent needed to play jazz.

Agree with TLK. On one hand, it takes a gifted musician to create good jazz. On the other hand, it can be difficult for someone else to interpret and appreciate it.
hey, they're not my words. Just quoting the late, great Tony Wilson.
But I really hate people who listen to 'intelligent' music and say 'oh, you're just not listening to it right, you need to be super intellectual to get it'
Utter b.s.. Same with classical music snobs. No, you're not more intelligent than me because you listen to Chopin. You may be more intelligent than me because I'm a thick c**t, but not because you listen to classical music or jazz and it speaks to you.
Man, I grew up with both in my house. I can't stand either.
Just my preference. Each to his own. Just don't try to intellectualise it.

@Bobby, try going for something like THE YELLOWJACKETS - BOB JAMES or GROVER WASHINGTON JR, you might find them a little less erratic to listen to.

Get a copy of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." Listen to it.
Listen to it again.
If you don't get it the third time you probably never will.

Here it is, I'd wager far too heavy and manic for someone getting into jazz though.

Some crossover stuff like Us3, Ronny Jordan, Guru's Jazzmatazz or United Future Organization might also be a good introduction to jazz.

yep... "So What" by Ronnie Jordan is a good starter. Also look out for Candy Dulfer.
