Both those pages working fine from my comp, no VPN being used.

Nothing seems out of the ordinary. MSN is fine now too.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

having trouble with mulitple sites and my proxy, HuanChu never has problems.

HC ... what's your secret?

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

I don't think they're being blocked, I think it has more to do with the underground cables that were damaged in the typhoon.

It has severely slowed down connections between mainland China and websites in the rest of the world.

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

nothing blocked, nothing slow.
NYtimes, Yahoo, MSN messenger, whatever

Either from work, home or proxies.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

for me:

home (no proxy) -- blocked
home (proxy)--- slow, slow, slow
work (no proxy) -- not blocked

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

last night too for me. Local sites no problem but foreign based sites pretty much no good.

Yeah, wefrucar has it right i think. The news i was able to find either blamed it on the typhoon in Taiwan (not likely) or an earthquake damaging the underwater cables.

This happened about 2 years ago too. Took about a month to get it going again. Hope its faster this time.

dont bother complaining to your provider, they will tell you its not their fault.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

yeah I remember that. 2 years ago already?

I've accessed msn from Lido, Shuangjing and Guomao in the last couple of days.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

yeah, several local website can't be accessed from yesterday.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

Beijing. East North 3rd Ring Rd.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

Yeah, posted the same thing in the msn thread.

Can't get onto www.last.fm which is a disaster. Can access some foreign sites without VPN but they're slow as hell. It took me 5 hours to download an album from iTunes on saturday night. usually takes 5 minutes. No msn. Nada. It's also slow with F***g*t*.

I live near admin. In fact I occasionally follow him, taking pictures. I'm doing a mural on my bedroom wall. It's quite spectacular. Now I have a face for the papier mache Admin doll that I sleep with, instead of the one that I drew on.

^ have you noticed our neighborhood now has a local western-style watering hole? called The Brick. Supposed to have been open over the weekend but still under construction when I popped by

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

I hadn't noticed, but now I know you might be in there, I'll be lurking in the shadows, camera at the ready.

Update: Everything is now screwed even through free gate. What the hell is wrong?

What IS strange is that you can access everything through FG, except this site. Why is that?

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

Ok, so it was an earthquake. This proves that God really is a CCP member. Probably with a mid-level position at SARFT.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

I'm up by the NW side (4th ring road) and MSN and hotmail are inaccessible. Google and thebeiinger.com came up real fast. Maybe try the local wireless place later.... Yesterday was weird, too.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

Also in NW Haidian, everything very slow, cant download my favorite shows!

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

Reporting from cool Haidian.

Yep, many sites can't be accessed.

As far as news sites go, nytimes is meiyou. latimes no problemo. washingtonpost also accessible. As are many of the pommy sites.

Yesterday yahoo no prob, today meiyou. Google fine. Local sites mei wenti.

Don't think it's the typhoon. Can access all sites through proxy but slow. But what do I know, I can barely type on a keyboard. What does that the Alt button do?

Over and out.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

From East 4th Ring and Liangmahe Lu, everything normally accessible w/o proxy/VPN still is. However, about half of the non-Chinese sites I've visited are 2-5 times slower to load than normal.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

So why are some people experiencing problems while others aren't?

My computer is really slow today and I cannot get facebook through the usual proxy I use.

I'll bet God chooses who gets good Internet. Admin and I are smited because of our mutual love of harcore, barely legal pornography.

Yet pure aier2 and Huanchu, with their hippy lifestyles, are free to surf where they please.

Unfair!

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has announced that a malfunction in its FNAL/RNAL submarine cable has impacted communications from China to the United States and Europe. Unicom is actively taking steps to restore normal service. Unicom's international service department reported that the FNAL/RNAL cable is a key information conduit for Northeast Asia. The cable was broken between Hong Kong to Taiwan on August 12 due to the Morakot typhoon, but as its backup route remained intact, telecom service was unaffected. Today at approximately 2:20 p.m., the backup route became damaged in the vicinity of Pusan, Korea, affecting international telecom service between China and countries in the direction of North America and Europe.

An industry source confirmed that the cable is broken, adding that the break would impact over 100Gbps of outgoing bandwidth. Today, access to international websites such as Yahoo has been sluggish, with widespread outages in access to MSN.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

How convenient!

I wouldn't think they'd be in such a hurry to get it sorted. This is probably how the Chinese government would prefer it.

If it weren't for the pesky foreign media meddling in China's affairs, it would take forever.

Which means I can come here more often. Lucky you.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

Glad it's not just me. Yahoo and a few other sites weren't working very well and neither was I able to sign into the Playstation Network.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

At my friend's place on ChangAn Street near SciTech and I also can't get to a lot of foreign sites, even when I am proxying through a server of mine in the US. So the cut/damaged cable seems plausible. Using a China Netcom...er...China Unicom DSL link. Meh.

Re: boatload of sites blocked this morning -- yahoo? ...

Happened in 2007 as well.

Going to get worse if they don't at least protect DNS:

Depends if you are on a CNC/UNICOM link or a China Telecom link. Those two major backbone ISP's in China don't peer and CT owns the international links - all 6 of them. So guess whos packets are getting priority?

Also if you are on a DSL connection expect to get less access than those people who are paying their real 4-6K a month for a business DDN link.

So while my home sucks - the office doesn't completely suck.
