Chinese Americans in China? Hao bu hao?

I am curious about experiences with Americans of Asian, East Asian (to be more specific) heritage.

Especially about Chinese Americans who come to China, their patterns, their prejudices towards Chinese and white laowai, their secret thoughts...

There is no such thing as a Chinese American. They are only Americans. The best you could hope for are Americans of Chinese heritage. Please do not insult Americans by calling them Chinese.

Re: Chinese Americans in China? Hao bu hao?

While I generally disagree with zhenlai's quixotic mission to rid the English language of variants on "American," in this case.... yea, it's kinda accurate to say that these "Chinese Americans" are really just Americans that look Chinese.
They think just like any other American, their Chinese is often no better than other Americans who've studied the language, their patterns and prejudices are just like any other American's. (Granted, many of them still have family here and speak the language fluently, but even so.)

The main difference, really, is that they face more discrimination and prejudice from the mainland Chinese who look down on them (or at best consider them curiously strange).

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Re: Chinese Americans in China? Hao bu hao?

I am sure they have a special identity. The Americans of Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese heritage I have met considered themself (secretly) intelligent...

And if you have a look at the statistics Asians in generell as ethnical group are quite intelligent:

Japan 105
China 100
USA 98
Jamaica 72

zhenlai, unless you're a native American Indian shut up!you whiteys kicked the Native American Indians out and now you say you're a pure American? hyphentated Americans is what you have in the good 'ol USA!you're probably Jewish American hence your bitterness and anger.

Like an owl, a bird of the night, silent in flight, stealth like, curious about things but are happy to sit and wait until the time is right to obtain their goals (catch or conquer their prey).

I am American, white, Catholic, Irish, English, Dutch and German heritage, blond hair and blue eyes.

The so called "Native Americans" were from someplace else also. Their ancestors came from Mongolia and southern Russia so that makes me equal to them. We all came from someplace else and that is what makes us great. We are all just Americans. There is no suffix or prefix needed. I am not bitter I just want the people of my country to be respected not insulted by adding other countries names to the only one they need.

Oh there is nothing pure about any person on earth. There are no pure bred humans so you can get over that illusion. It's back to the ignore list for you.

(IQ)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_and_the_Wealth_of_Nations

IQ and the Wealth of Nations is a controversial 2002 book by Dr. Richard Lynn, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland.[1] The book argues that differences in national income (in the form of per capita gross domestic product) correlate with differences in the average national intelligence quotient (IQ). The authors interpret this correlation as showing that IQ is one important factor contributing to differences in national wealth and rates of economic growth, but that it is not the only determinant of these differences. The data, methodology, and conclusions have been criticized.[2] The 2006 book IQ and Global Inequality is a follow-up to IQ and the Wealth of Nations.

This is not science or fact, but just an author's opinion.

Mind you it’s not hard to find authors that believe Elvis is alive, Bigfoot lives in Shasta CA, or that all Beijing English teacher are writers/celebrities/junkies.

Even if you come from a country with an low IQ, like Equatorial Guinea (Philipines or Ireland), doesnt mean that you necessarily have an IQ of 59 (86 or 93). Thats just an estimation of the average persons IQ. You could also have 120 or more. So no worries about that, UFCtrainer.

I agree with you. Some came 20000 years ago, your ancestors came maybe 200 years ago but what about those Americans who have arrived to the US just few years, some days, or even some minutes ago, those Americans who get shot at the borders like rabbits, yes, zhenlai, I mean the Americans of Mexican heritage?

The indigenous people in South America are closely related to the gene pool of todays China, Korea, Japan. In Peru they actually look a bit Japanese, great hook noses!

Re: Chinese Americans in China? Hao bu hao?

by the way...

When speaking about race and intelligence: Ashkenazi Jews in the United States is the ethnic group with the highest IQ, 112. It doesnt mean that they are in generell more intelligent but you will find more people with an IQ above 130 which lifted this groups IQ up to 112.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashkenazi_intelligence

Coming back to our subject. I think that Americans of East Asian heritage being surrounded by white and dark trash will develop a superiority complex when it comes to intelligence. They will hide it as good as they can (as their little treasure) but if there is a confrontation THEY WILL SHOW THEIR FULL POWER.

This statistics even shows us that East Asian Americans are smarter than South East Asian Americans. Ha! Thats great!

Mensa IQ Levels

IQ or Intelligence Quotient is an attempt to measure intelligence. This means many things to many people but generally the attribute of intelligence refers to quickness of mental comprehension (or mental agility). Intelligence is often confused with knowledge, wisdom, memory, or other attributes and in general has a variety of meanings depending on the context in which it is used. The term IQ usually refers to the attempt to measure a person's mental agility.

There are many standard IQ tests in use around the world. On most intelligence tests, average IQ score is 100, but some tests give different numerical values to the level required for entry into Mensa, in the same way that the same temperature is expressed by different numerical values on the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales.

One way of comparing scores from different IQ tests is to convert them to a ranking, or percentile score, which tells you in which band you fit. A percentile score of 99% means that you are in the top 1%, a percentile score of 98% puts you in the top 2% and so on.

Briefly: their are many different tests to measure IQ. Their scores vary, 120 in one test is equivalent to 140 in another for instance. The relevant measurement is what percentile you achieve. 98th percentile qualifies you for MENSA.

Me 158 Cattells (supervised) 98+ percentile.

As previously mentioned IQ relates to problem solving and mental agility not wisdom, that alas comes with experience for which there is no substitute. Nerd

Re: Chinese Americans in China? Hao bu hao?

Thanks for sharing, Sean. Interesting. Very interesting.

I have heard of this negative experiences of Chinese Americans before. But is it really an issue that some of them come to China to teach English and feel discriminated against because no school really wants them?
No - the real issue is that these people as part of the great Chinese race return to the place of their origin and try to teach something they learnd when they were 2 years old. How did they spent their days when they were 5, 7 or 22 years old? Only eating potato chips and watching TV?

Dont they feel ashamed? THAT is the issue.

The people from the USA with Chinese blood come here and find out that this is the way China is and then go back home. They can't and don't want to deal with it.

Warning politically incorrect statement to follow!!!!

I suppose, the same way black Americans feel when they take a trip to West Africa. They say deep in their mind, "Thank goodness great grandpa was sold by a neighboring tribe to the Dutch and ended up in South Carolina."

I love my planet Vulcan. I'm proud of being a Vulcan in the universe.

Re: Chinese Americans in China? Hao bu hao?

He he, yeah, thats possible...
... but there is still a difference. Every Chinese with some money can make it to the Unites States. The black people of today are the minority of the 10 % who survived the rough journey from Africa and the life as slaves. In the nature we would call it natural selection. As humans we dont use it when talking about humans because we would get afraid of being a victim of natural selection one day.

Another thought: are East-Asians made to be collectivists? Are they more sensitive about feeling shame than feeling guilt? Or is it just culture?

When I write East-Asian I mean people of East-Asian heritage.

Re: Chinese Americans in China? Hao bu hao?

Lately, though, an awful lot of Americans with Chinese ethnicity are moving to China, as are many Chinese who've attended U.S. universities. (Until recently, the vast majority stayed in the U.S. after graduation.)

One of the big reasons, as I understand it, other than the general improvement in conditions, is that they can jump into senior management here immediately, without having the experience required by similar positions in the U.S.

That would certainly help explain the general management quality of companies here in China.

Re: Chinese Americans in China? Hao bu hao?

what do you mean there is no such a thing called Chinese American? There are Italian American, Irish American. But you are right, we are all american. Chinese American if you google the wikipedia.

Here is proper definition of chinese american. not including the american born in US, but like me, immigrant to US later on. Within this community, the term Chinese American is often broadly defined to include not only immigrants from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau and their descendants but also immigrants and descendants of people from Taiwan[6] and overseas Chinese people who have immigrated to the United States from places as diverse as Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Mexico.

Only in New York or Boston those big cities people do discriminate each other by telling their origin, to call either irish or Italian descent. But in middle America, where the heart land is, most americans have been there generations.

So I don't agree Haoren said Chinese American all have the same view regarding Chinese, etc. every one is an individual in US.

Welcome, "lostinbeijing2"! Thanks for joining my little thread, I deeply appreciate that. You are the first Chinese American who has the balls to join our lecture! Well, of course in real life you have no balls, sorry for that metaphor, I couldnt think of another one, my English is so poor - but referring to your personal add "BOOM BOOM", the two picture were really, really beautiful!

Anyways... when I speak of collectivism I dont mean that Chinese people have all the same opinion about a subject, rather they havent got an opinion at all. Opinions that is something for sick western people, they all think they have different opinion but a different subjects but sadly they have no opinion at all neighter, they just copy their friends, the newspapers, or the policy of the government (patriotism)...

When speaking of collectivist I rather mean that the person is more concerned about the group he or she belongs to, and if there is no group (for East Asians) at all, they easily feel lost...

Please share your experience as Chinese American in China with us. Please, I would be very grateful.
