Censorship b.s.

Ok, f*** it, I've had enough in the last month, this censorship crap is just pickling my beetroot.

It's hard enough being out here and trying to do the job I'm doing with spanning the cultural gaps and different expectations between the mothership back home and the local factories, ... but when the internet (which was one of the few windows into my world back home) is continuously f***ed with it's just a bit raw.

Youtube, MySpace (family were posting pics of the kids birthdays etc there) virtually any blogspot or forum and the odd news site I've wanted to visit.

Time to start learning Bulgarian or Romanian?

Come on dude, do some research, it's not that hard to bypass the great firewall of china. Check this list out

Re: Censorship b.s.

yeah, listen to sk8, it works great! hope it stays that way!

Re: Censorship b.s.

Damn - "loose lips sink ships" and all!

Yes had already found those thanks.

Free-thang worked great for the first day I used it, after that it ground to a halt and became unusable.

Re: Censorship b.s.

The proxies don't work and the rest of the internet gone down the train too.

DAMN!! Can it be true? I'll have to get my ass off this chair and go outside (first time in 5 years)?!!

All the shite stopped working for me since last night. Crying

Sign up for a VPN service. It costs a little, but believe me, it's worth it.

Yeah, down for me now too. This really sucks.

Re: Censorship b.s.

What are they playing at? bit by bit, the internet is dying, even a simple image search jams up. Then I suppose they'll go to work on VPN users or simply make it illegal to use one.

Re: Censorship b.s.

Same here - nadda.

What isn't blocked is just f-ing tediously slow.

Might get a 5min window to "reality" if I'm very lucky.

Had one foreigner from a potential foreign animation start-up/JV asking a few of us over a beer what kind of T-3 connections are available (he wanted to potentially send gigs of info offshore) poor bastard looked gobsmacked when a bunch of us collapsed into our beer laughing.

I don't think I'll be re-newing my contract out here with "the mothership" and other smaller clients, ... or, I'll just start looking around for a better deal in one of the ex soviet-block countries that are starting to undercut things here.

I lol'd!

I remember back in 1997 fantasizing about a T1 or OC3 connection to play Quake DM with low ping. Damn LPBs got really annoying! I was real happy to upgrade from 33.6 to 56k modem too.. My download speeds jumped from 3.2 to 5.5kb/s. And I tried hard to edit my "secret registry settings" to squeeze out even more SPEED.

Good times.

Re: Censorship b.s.

I guess I don't understand why everyone else is having problems. The internet in my apartment is blazing fast and my proxy (Hotspot Shield) works just fine every time.

Not trying to rub it in or anything - I understand some parts of the city/country just don't have good internet access (my last employer's network was pitiful), but most of the coffee shops/internet cafes/etc that I've been to have had at least serviceable internet available. Maybe try logging on somewhere other than your bedroom? Tongue

I can't speak for the others, but I'm speaking about new blockages just in the last 2-3 days. Up til then, Free**** was working fine for me, now it's not. I guess I'll try Hot****, but if I understood earlier posters they've recently had trouble with it too.

If these workarounds have been successfully thwarted, then they shouldn't be working anywhere. If some work, some don't then I think the problem is something besides the great firewall.

Re: Censorship b.s.

*shrug* hotspot working fine for me.... the only time it's ever not worked was during a couple days after the typhoon.

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

I think that's exactly it - even during/after the typhoon, my internet slowed down (only a little!), but didn't stop completely. i think it comes down to differences between service providers/connection types. i have no idea who my ISP is, my landlord takes care of that stuff - I just know it works, and works well. My condolences to those who are "suffering" - I went all summer on a dial-up connection and well...yeah.

Re: Censorship b.s.

Come on, there are still many ways to bypass the well-intentioned, innocent government efforts to keep us from getting into nasty, evil, free websites of the West!!
Come on, we already pay for internet connections so payin' a VPN is not THAT bad

Welcome to the Great China firewall,

And it's here to stay.

Do you have a link to the older Hotspot Shield, the version that still works?
