How much to pay for a private Mandarin teacher for a few days?
Next time I hit BJ I plan to hire a Mandarin teacher for a few days. I have no special demand, doesn't need to speak much English too. Doesn't need to have teaching experience. Basically just a chat partner.
Biggest demand is is having free time for a few days, maybe 4-5 days or so, all day long.
The hourly rate would come a bit expensive, what would be a fair rate for a few days? I thought 2-300 a day would do. So what is the going rate?
(I know there is "language exchange". But I have no interest in teaching English, I just want to do Mandarin only and don't mind to pay.)

So you can place an ad in "employment avaiable" to find a teacher. I am not sure the price, it depends. Any way, try to place an ad, it helps a lot.

Thanks, that was helpful.
Neither do I plan to put in fake ads to check prices. I have no current demand. Just want to check some going rates.

hehe, I didn't mean that you need to place an fake ad to check the price. What do you mean the "going rates"?

You can put an ad with basically the same content as the thread. Just say you plan to come to Beijing on XX date, looking for a teacher for 4-5 whole days and would like to know how much they would charge.

Somehow I feel it's not honest. I know, I should adapt and not care too much about honesty. But it takes time.

Where's the dishonesty? There is no lie in it. You're explaining what you need and they're making you offers, no obligation to take on their services. You can send a thankyou reply to them if you wish.
It's not like you're saying you WILL stick up with whoever answers you, or you are just asking prices but in fact has no intention to go to China, or just want to know the prices so that you can charge other people for similar services. Or is it?
Anyway, these ladies (and few gents) have surely come across many flaky requests before. No big deal.

Sorry to say but as your offer is vague, you might not get a clear accurate answer.
You're asking for a Mandarin Teacher but just for chatting...You know that official Mandarin Teachers like any other kind of Teachers attend university for several years in order to get their degree and in Ningbo where I live they might charge you around 100rmb for an hour which is fair.
Now maybe you would like a Tutor which means someone can speak English and train you in order to correct your Chinese and for a full day, I'd say 300rmb is a fair start for negotiation if it's for several days.
Finally be aware that if you come over for business and go around in factories needing translation, this person will ask you more (if she can handle) as this is no more tutoring but translating and negotiating.
I agree with seabreeze98 and think that posting a clear ad in the classifieds would be the best way to get a clear answer.

I really have doubt there are many "teachers" with degrees here. I presume 95% are part time amateurs. But I don't mind that at all.
It sounds fair. But again, if you book one for a few days full time I am sure rate is way below that.
Great! That's what i wanted to know! And that's about what I want, minus the "speak English". I found the experience more intense when people don't speak English. More difficult yes, but the learning rate is much better·
I am aware of that. But that's not what I need.
I will do a post when the time is right, 但是现在我不知道什么时候去北京。同时的时候我用一点MSN。。。 (I know it sux, but it's a little above zero)

I had been working as an announcer in a broadcasting station for more than 10 years before I came to Beijing to study English at Beijing Foreign Studies University. I speak quite standard mandarin and have Standard spoken Chinese horizontal checkout rank certificate first levels of first-class.
I hope I could find a friend from the States or Canada to study languages together. I speak a little English to communicate so it's better you could also speak a little Chinese. My contact is 13911223917. I hope it’s free each other.

in china and in other countries, same works have different values,
in china u should find the real value yourself, or you will be cheated.
something of $10, first the seller may ask $50, then you 2 bargain. most of the chinese think it is reasonable
