how can i get high speed internet without major hassles?

I just moved into an apartment in Lido and am having a total nightmare of a time getting internet set up. My girlfriend went with our rental agent to China Unicom and they told her that we HAVE to have a landline set up and that in order to do that, our landlady would have to go down there with her original ID, which we will never be able to get her to do. They also told us we need to pay several months up front and set up an appointment a couple weeks in advance during normal business hours, when we have to work and can't possibly be there. Is there any way to make this a little easier? Is there someway we can bribe somebody to just come and set it up? I mean this is just ridiculous.

Your landlord usually has to go for you as it is their property

basically, no one told us that we needed a landline to get internet, even though we told the agent that the one thing we wanted was internet. when we found out there was a phone line in the apartment already, we told the landlady we didn't want to pay for it and asked her to cancel it. the very next day, we go to get internet and discover we need the landline. so therefore, she's been reluctant to go down there and set it up again for us. i just don't see why we need to have a phoneline? don't they have regular cable/dsl internet here?
