Don't buy anything foreign in Beijing. If it is real it is going to cost you far more than it is worth. Go to another country, like Taiwan, who don't charge the ridiculous customs taxes that China does.
seriously?? so its like, its way cheaper to buy Zara clothes here in philippines than buying zara clothes in beijing? like how much is the difference? uhmm.. a Zara shirt costs like 999 -1200 pesos here... if i convert that to RMB its like 150-170 RMB.. soo.. does the shirts in zara costs like how much in beijing?
Unfortunately, the higher rents plus import/consumption taxes more than offset the cheaper labour costs here when it comes to retail shopping. So if you're comparing genuine articles, even for high street brands such as zara, then clothes will be more expensive here in Beijing. Maybe not that much more, but big enough to notice. The difference is even greater for pricier designer labels. I've been here for several years and many of my friends who travel overseas frequently tend to do their clothes shopping outside china. Designs are also very localised. The stuff in Zara Europe has very different designs and quality (and sizes of course) compared to the stuff in Zara Beijing. I'm still horrified sometimes at the clothes the girls wear here.
Fully agree, even in Europe the original ones are much cheaper than here: Clothes, Computers, Bags, Phones, nearly everything....besides girls..oh, original hardware were asked for!

Beijing has ridiculously high prices for Adidas and Nike. I don't think it's because of import taxes. It's just that it's seen as luxury here(like Pizza Hut) because Beijingers have no taste, and the owners know they can charge extortionate prices and their stores will still be full of nongles buying it all up.
I think Dao has part of it right - most Chinese with money are what we would call "new money" - they are the first generation in their family to have disposable income, and they want everybody to know about it. Expensive western brandnames are big, and actual quality is not a factor. I'm currently having lost of custom clothes (suits, shirts, coats etc) and shoes made, and none of the Chinese people I've met can give me any advice because they literally can't understand why I would spend 1000 kuai on a suit without an "Armani" logo on it.
Import taxes are big though too (It's how China keeps domestic demand up and foreign demand down, which helps keep their yuan pegged so low), so all-in-all the western goods I've seen are at least 25% higher than in the US. Don't bother.
Hey there, if you still want to shop from back home, though in the US, it is now possible.
Shop from any US online retailer and have it shipped to China with Dong-Xi.com
About Dong-Xi.com
Dong-Xi.com was created by China expats for China expats. All too often, our
friends have had a difficult time finding clothing that fits, locating favorite
name brands from back home and tired of spending hours traveling across the city
to shop. Our payment and shipping solutions allow you shop from US websites that
was otherwise impossible. www.dong-xi.com
Don't buy any name brand in beijing unless there is a big sale.
For example, I like superdry clothing but it is at least double the price in Beijing when comparing with the UK.
I think the same might be true for electronic the laptops look expensive and slightly out of date.
It doesn't seem to do the retailers much harm though - judging by the thousands of Adidas, Nike, Prada, Armani, etc etc stores out there, someone is buying their wares.

Definitely NO cheaper than Hong Kong, hands down. Bring your original stuffs from Hong Kong, get your fakes/local products here in China.
PS: Please note that prices in Beijing is slightly higher than southern cities.
