Speaking Putonghua outside of places where it's not the standard dialect

I asserted in another thread, before it got locked, that I communicated using putonghua outside of Beijing just fine. Someone called B.S. so here are a couple of questions.

If I didn't use putonghua (which is the only dialect I can speak) how did I communicate? I certainly didn't use English.

To those of you who learned Chinese in Beijing (or anywhere really but I speak with a Beijing accent) and have travelled extensively were you able to communicate in putonghua with the locals of the area in China you were in?

Last but not least would you consider the idea that speaking putonghua in Shanghai is impossible?

I myself have been to most of the Chinese provinces including the west and south (my wife is from Hubei) and have been able to use putonghua to communicate everywhere I've been. They understand me a little easier than I can understand them but I've never had to ask someone to repeat themselves in putonghua more than a couple of times.

Third paragraph up there should read:

Would you consider the idea that it's impossible to communicate in Shanghai using putonghua a fallacy?

Re: Speaking Putonghua outside of places where it's not the ...

Wasn't that, like, a long time ago?

I don't think anyone said that you can't use putonghua in shanghai. But most locals do prefer to speak shanghainese, both for gossip and business deals.
Can you link the original thread so I can see exactly what was actually said? This seems to be very important to you.

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

I was in SH and no problem to communicate in Mandarin. SHnese is very much a minory language. Just consider how many 外地人 are in SH. Yes, you can hear SHnese from time to time, but you hear more Mandarin.

Yes, it's true that just about 55% of Chinese know Mandarin up to a level were they can communicate. But that's an over-the-country average. The ratio will be much much higher in cities.

Mandarin IS and will stay as the main language in China.

My very intermediate-level speaking and comprehension ability of putonghua has been equally useful/useless regardless of where I've been in China.

I thought it would be tough going to Guangzhou, but everyone could understand Mandarin just fine. Sometimes locals would speak Guangdong hua to me so I had to ask them to repeat it until they realize I only understand Mandarin.

Honestly I have much more problems with lao beijing ren.

Re: Speaking Putonghua outside of places where it's not the ...

for beijing ren, speaking literal PuTongHua is more difficult, i think. because it's more difficult for them to realize that they have deviated from it when they are really in the talking.
