A school to avoid
Seems my last post did something weird.
Anyway, Hampson English = avoid.
Just just don't trust them. Am currently in the midst of a deposit battle. They take a portion of your wages at the start as a 'deposit' just in case you do a runner or something.
As expected getting it back is a different matter. Expect to be given the wrong phone numbers for the head office, to be screamed at over the phone when you finally reach head office (in a kind of 'how did you get this number?' way), and have other branches start calling you to give you more students when trying to quit and retrieve your deposit.
If anyone can give me the address of the HQ, cos I plan on turning up sometime and re-creating 'That Scene' in the Matrix where they storm the gov building.

Re: A school to avoid
That's the spirit.
Seems the common thing for schools here to hold at least a couple weeks of your money, but it's completely illegal.
Not that it bothers them.
I do recall seeing them advertising here with the offer of an above reasonable wage. I tagged it as too good to be true.
Sometimes the same is different, but mostly, it's the same.

Re: A school to avoid
I'm told that the deposit thing is fairly common here, and is even legal--although, maybe that changed with the big new labor policy changes a year or two back.
I even know of several companies that will actually make employees pay a deposit, rather than withhold their first months' pay. I'm talking about Chinese employees; I don't know if they'd try it with foreigners.
Of course, if it's being used to screw employees out of money they're owed, that's another issue entirely.

Re: A school to avoid
This is complete BS! how can they get away with it? we must stand strong against them. My company waits to pay until the 10th of each month so if you ever want to quit they can just not pay you for those 10 days if they want. Totally illegal, these schools can fire you any day they want but if we want to leave we owe them money? ? This contract crap is ridiculous, whatever happend to just working, getting paid for your work, and if you quit you quit, no hard feelings on either side.

Re: A school to avoid
I don't know why you guys bother. Freelance tutoring pays far better (cash) and you don't have to do all that early morning, stupid games, stupid role plays, China loving, racist nationalistic crap.
Just find some students that want to go abroad and pass IELTS or something. I am yet to have a bad student this way.
I really know now just how sh*t it was teaching classes, of any sort, and putting up with all the crap involved, compared to tutoring. Loads of students in Beijing too.
Get yourself an "F" visa a place to live and go freelance.
Highly recommend it.
Private schools are especially sh*t now in Beijing compared to what they used to be. Sneaky and cheating and racist staff.

Re: A school to avoid
My company pays its Chinese employees on the last day of the month for the previous month's work--in other words there's a month's lag.
That's actually pretty common here.

Re: A school to avoid
hey robert, you don't teach at a school anymore?? you just do private tutoring?? i was hoping i could get enough tutoring jobs to support myself and give me a bit extra cash once i'm there. I've always heard its quite easy to find people willing to take private lessons.... i hope this is true where i will be going, it will make life in the kingdom much easier!!!!

Re: A school to avoid
Beijing is easy. Too many agents and work.
Smaller centers is cool once you get out there.
I think u will be OK. Just find an effective way to meet students or parents.

Re: A school to avoid
Yeah, the school is crook. I got my money back, but only by going spending hours of my fairly limited free time hassling them and then scaling the side of the HQ building.
I teach with another school and they are fine. They don't pester me, they keep track of everything on a computer and are just generally better. (Fluent English).
I finish teaching with them soon and then after that, yeah, I'm going it alone.
Private lang schools are sneaky. At some point someone must have agreed to not being paid their first few lesson's salary, suddenly making it the norm for all these school to insist you work up a deposit before you get paid.

Re: A school to avoid
Just because it's common doesn't make it right MK, or legal.
It just makes it easier to hold them to ransom if things go sour. Not that you'd be involved in anything like that though.

Re: A school to avoid
Oh, I don't think it's right.
But it is common here, and I'm pretty sure it's legal.
I once set about changing the policy, but management complained like hell. Meanwhile, very few employees seem to have a problem with it.

Re: A school to avoid
Yeah, seems anything here is legal and if not then it is not enforced anyway, especially if it is just some laowai complaining! hehe. I like the "sample class" excuse, sure, I will come in and teach for you for free, not! Could you imagine if it was like that back in our home countries, you interview, they like you, then say, come in and work for a day or two for free, if we like you we will hire you!

Unless you want to be regarded as a whore for hire, there are just 2 simple responses (and a few more crude ones!):

1. That's not acceptable
2. There's no such thing as a free lunch!

Good post YunRui!
Take control from the interview... interview the school! Have them in the position of selling themselves to you.

Yeah sure you can put an ad in.
But you might find you get more attention than you bargained for. Maybe just put your email address not ur ph number and screen the replies.

Re: A school to avoid
...i got a couple friends finding jobs now and seems the vip/ one-on-one schools and agents are getting worse and worse...i just work at a school teaching classes to adults, and never had any hassles but i think the best bet is to get a full-time job with a school, and then do the one-on-one's for a little extra cash.

Re: A school to avoid
I've been interested in doing this. I know of a couple of people who would want me tutoring them but they're just old students of mine when I was teaching.
I don't really know how to go about finding people who need and English tutor, just many many people saying "u teach me english i teach u chinese k?"
There are so many ads for it online (and stupidly low prices too) so that can't be the way. Perhaps knowing one person and asking if they know anyone else who needs... I don't know...
tl;dr How do you find your students? Also, how much do you charge?
PM me please, I rarely check this forum. You don't accept PM's

Re: A school to avoid
Excellent advice. Problem is the school knows there's three more FOB's they can sell if you don't buy. I think every teacher needs to be informed and be willing to not scab the lowest wage and worst pedagogical scenario when other teachers say nay.

Re: A school to avoid
The Guy who moderates on here Huang Chu, is Johnson Zhang, alias **EDITED - Once again, show proof, before you show names. HuanChu**. I have been to the office, its located in an FAO office of a public school just 5 minutes from the Beijing South station, south west ring where they operate out of.
He has everyone fooled on here that he is fighting this battle against zhang and his crew, when he is the one who is behind it....he had you all fooled. Says he graduated fro m Glasgow University, they have never heard of him. They have this hair brained idea of bringing nurses from sichuan to Beijing to study for the NYCLEX American Nursing exam....dream on, dream on..this english guy, disguised as whoever he is, gets the teachers for Johnson, and this guy is actually Johnson himself, and works with a woman called angela. As for Danny Liu, he does send abusive mails and makes abusive obscene calls, as well as his girl friend, I was receiving anything from up to 50 in one day, just non stop abuse.
Many posters have said never to send zhang anything as he uses/misuses the information.
Have you never ever thought it strange how johnson zhang has direct contact with Huang chu on here? its because they are one and the same person, and hes not chinese, but hes from the UK, AND HE HAS HAD YOU ALL FOOLED, THEY ARE ALL INVOLVED IN ONE VERY BIG ELEABORATE SCAM...............If they were genuine and bonified, they would never need to use a whole variety of telephone numbers and email addresses, this guy wants to make money, and then disappear, vaporize and not get caught.
The editor, J white, the beijinger editor will be sought for questioning on this scam, and how one of his staff was using this very forum to do it in....very clever, very well sought out device and scam....but its over.

Re: A school to avoid
I'm having the same issue at the moment where Hampson English will not give me my deposit back!!!
I fulfilled my six month contract, but they are now saying I need the receipts from my first 3 payments (which they NEVER told me I needed!!)!
Does anyone have any advice on what needs to be done in order to get my money back?!
Thank you!!
kiwuk
Re: A school to avoid
Why would you work for a company (Hampson) that say they will pay you 200rmb an hour....a 100 min hour...
I said wait a minute that's more than 2 teaching hours so you mean 100/hr!
Response from Hampson: I don't think you are suitable!
My reply: yes I'm white and not fresh off the boat!
Really any company that advertises the same position so often for so long and pays that ; there has to be a message.
I didn't get as far as a deposit!
The last time a company mentioned a deposit I told them 10,000 to me for their good behaviour. I didn't start there either.
Deposit/payment retention= You can guarantee I am going to screw you sooner or later.
WISE UP IF THEY PAY PEANUTS THEY ARE GOING TO TREAT YOU LIKE A MONKEY!

Re: A school to avoid
Save time and just ask to see the contract of these so called schools straight away and you will know exactly how they operate. Dont give them your details until you are happy. Learn First and Easy English are among quite a few I can think of. These schools want deposits from you, along the lines of 2 lessons equiv. pay (per student!) and apparently you only get that back when you finish teaching with them. Add to that the USD fines and the mention of withholding 50% of your monthly salary if late a few times.. .

Re: A school to avoid
I agree with the above post, I always see them saying they want my visa scan, passport scan, diploma scan, etc before even being hired!! I never give them anything until I am hired. Go interview, that is fine, but I will not give them anything until I am hired. And as for deposit, what the hell is that?? I would never pay anyone here to go to work for them, if they want you to pay them a deposit just walk out and look for another job, there are plenty out there.
