BOC: missing money

hi,

about 2 weeks ago, i got money sent from overseas to my new Bank of China account. I have been checking my account since then and still have not received any money yet, I have checked with the other side and am sure the money was sent. Who can i see about this matter? the bank of China in Jianwai doesn't have any english speaking service, is there other branches that can help?

Re: BOC: missing money

Get someone who speaks Chinese to help you.
Did you confirm the account number is the same and everything, is there a sort code?

Re: BOC: missing money

I can help here.

I had the same thing first time I transferred money from my English account to here.

No, it doesn't show up on your balance on an ATM.

You have to go into the bank, give them your card and tell them you transferred some money. They'll confirm that money was sent, and how much. Then you just change it into RMB and pop it into your Chinese account.

You have to go into the branch it was sent to and go with your passport.

Good luck.

Re: BOC: missing money

oh wow thanks for that information. i didn't know it was that complicated. will go tommorow and see, hopefully i can try to communicate what i mean

Re: BOC: missing money

No worries, chief.

Yeah, I was waiting about 3 weeks the first time. Then I was worried so I went to the bank and they said it had been in for 2 weeks. It just doesn't show up on your balance.

Get someone to write instructions down in Chinese if you can.

I trust you got all the info correct at the other end, like branch sort code and address etc.

I wouldn't necessarily advise changing it to RMB at all right now, particularly if you're from the UK.

I use a nationwide debit card, which has the visa-side charge of 0.84% of every transaction. So for £100 GBP that's just 84 pence.

The RMB is weakening against the UK GBP now, so I've saved a whole load. keeping in mind the transfer fee from here to China, plus the charge for receiving the money here, and on top of that the fact that me taking 1000 yuan out of an ICBC ATM 1 month ago cost quite a lot more than it would today, you're actually better not sending lots of money here when you're 99.9% sure the exchange rate can only get better, which it will for the foreseeable future.

Re: BOC: missing money

True. The fee was astronomical, but I transferred quite a lot. I moved it the conventional way because I'm not really that clued-up on banking dodges.

But, I was just giving the guy advice because he'd already had it sent. There's not much you can do with it if you don't change it into RMB.

Guy I know didn't change it all at once to RMB, so that's probably the best way of doing things, particularly if you run the risk of not using it all up whilst here.
