2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
Hi boys and girls,
Here's what I hope to be the first thread on skiing and snowboarding for this year's Winter season. With the early snow falls we've had so far, one is allowed to hope for a proper season!
I've just heard about 2 proper resorts 3 to 4 hours drive away from Beijing, near Chongli (Zhangjiakou - Hebei). Wanglong and Dolomiti, both with peaks at 2000m and quality lifts. Fom what I hear in past years they actually had some good days with a fair amount of snow falls.
Anyone know more about those? Any hints to share?
Am planning my first trip there 2moro. Hope it'll be a blast!!!!
Cheers,
Geez

How was it? What do they have? Ok for a beginner?
I am planning to go skiing with a friend too. I am a beginner, but my friend is very good.

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
It was fine. Decent resorts, like a small one in Europe. Top height 2000m. Quality lifts. Only drawback is the bottleneck on the way back from Hebei to Beijing, loads of trucks being sorted out from the traffic by cretin cops.

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
How to get there? Can you pls share the map or addr?
Was it crowded?

I went to NanShan last year. I thought it was ok. I'm not a snow skiier, so it suited me fine.
I heard there's a skiing/snowboarding place near the end of subway line one that kinda sucks but is cheap and could be a place to zip over to in the afternoon for a couple hours of practice after work. Does anyone know what it's called or where it is?

Hey Bigsmile,
if you are looking for a good place to ski (for beginners and advanced) I recomment to go to Duolemeidi. You can check Details on their website: www.dolomitiski.cn
They also have a shuttle bus from Beijing, and the resort actually looks like the ones in Europe, and they have a good and fast lift, not like some other Chinese stations, where you freeze, while you go up the hill.
The Pizza is also great!

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
That place looks alright, am tired of Nanshan with its queues... okay some questions.
1. How long does the shuttle bus take to get there? how often?
2. How often are runs closed?

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
I am surprised and disappointed at the low number of comments or even threads on this subject.
This is the 1 forum which gets the most attention from foreigners, and the 2 resorts mentionned above should already have garnered enough interest to satisfy most ski bums in this city. So what's wrong?
Is it that by some luck most ski bums follow enother forum or some weird thread I haven't found yet? Don't tell me they're not on the net.
PPL, the skiing in Wanlong last monday kicked major ass. Period. Loads of slopes (11 out of 22), loads of vertical, well groomed, almost no-one, plenty of snow cannons blasting the whole place white. What else do you want? You reach a 2200m lodge, grab a coffe and hammer it!!!
f***, even Dolomit does the trick if you don't mind trading diversity (7 out of 7 slopes open - 2000m top elevation, a little less vertical) for LOADS of additional skiing time (fastest detachable 6 seater wind protected chair in China.). Again, well groomed and plenty of snow Canons.
So what's wrong with you people? How the f*** can you be satisfied with Nanshan? You call those hills skiing? Yabuli (Heilongjiang) and Beidahu (Jilin) are not the only places where you can really ski anymore. Chongli really does the trick within a 3 hours drive from BJ (assuming good driving conditions).
Well, am probaly venting my frustration at a wall. These guys must be hiding somewhere...
BTW, a small teaser of things to come in China: Mt. Changbaishan in Jilin.

I just came back from a small field near Mi Yun, good for a laugh, too early, no natural snow yet. Cheap and two hours skiing on the lower slopes was enough.

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
I went to Dolomiti on Nov 14 and Wanlong on Monday 7 Dec. So far last Monday was my best experience skiing in China. Back when Dolomiti opened in mid Nov that was my best experience. Real slopes, real vertical, real choice.
Dolomiti: 1 speed 6 seater detachable lift (only in one in China so far). Altitude 2000m. Probably about 1000m vertical at least. From that lift there's 4 totally different ways to ski down. On the facing mountain (2000m too) you need to take 2 Pomas to reach the top. 3 ways to ski that down. That makes 7 slopes. about 200rmb ski pass per day and 150 for the gear.
Wanlong: Too big to tell ya. I took at least 4 lifts that we working and I could see another 3 or 4 in preparation. 11 slopes were available. There's about 3 main sections of one large mountain that you can ski. Only one and a half was open. They were blasting snow all over the rest. That's 22 slopes all in all. 2200m altitude, about 1500m vertical. 400rmb ski pass per day, about 200 for the gear. Plus there's a hotel at the bottom of the slopes...
Both of the above are real cold, and due to the altitude the snow that fell in early novemeber hasn't gone at all from all of the north facing slopes. So the view from the top is still pretty cool. Both of these resorts invest heavily in snow cannons, and thanks to the temperature, the cover stays very well. Very well groomed slopes. What else? The black diamond slopes didn't feel like the gullies back at home in the pyrenees but was still pretty steep.
The only difference between these 2 places is the lifts: Dolomiti has less slopes but a high speed lift, so you can probably log in more ski time in a day and there's just enough diversity to keep you busy. The lifts are wanlong are not high speed, so you waste some time (like any other regular resorts), but the large choice of slopes totally makes up for it (though u pay an extra for it).
The locality, Chongli, remains a crappy chinese town but a brand new 4 star hotel is opening, in full modern chalet style (called rong chen alps town...
). There's a number of 3 star hotels in the area dedicated to skiers. Consider that there are another 2 or 3 Nanshan like shitty hills in that area too catering to the mass market. Chongli is aiming itself at being the yabuli of beijing... well, not there yet but certainly a valid effort. I didn't know about this until this year - had I knows last year my board would not have taken the dust. I almost feel guilty about this.

actually my mistake: wanlong is 2100m altitude. Not much, but just enough to satisfy within driving distance of BJ...

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
Damn I hate sounding like a commercial tune but we went there for 2 days last week and it was RADICAL!
fast slopes, a little fresh snow from a couple days before, and even some powder between the trees!
Riders, stop being pussies, shake off the dust from your boards and go!

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
av seen that changbaishan map before, but note that it's a hiking trail, no lifts, but still applicable in some parts to "off-trail" skiing. What av heard from a local rider is that you pay 200rmb per day to some local and he'll drive you up and down in his 4*4 as many times u want up to the top. Then the rest is up to ya

For this week end, try this:

Pictures from yesterday:
Probably the steepest slope less than an hour's drive away from Beijing. That's just the one slope, and it normally stands out from the desert rock, but hey, it's powder week!

Noting to wet your self over but I will try and give it a shot over the weekend if not the next. Damn I miss Chamonix!!
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
hehe, i don't need chamonix, i haven't been skiing for such a long time that i'll wet myself over any little snowy hill.
how are you getting over there then?

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
Done, another week-end trip to Dolomiti. We took the train, unfortunately didn't have sleeper on the way back, but still, better than the discomfort of being blocked for 2 hours in a car with 3 dudes at the entrance to Beijing (just before Badaling, see previous posts for details)
Dolomiti did a great job at making it a smooth ride from and back to the train station at zhangjiakou with a pick up service (600 rmb return for a Van)
Chongli Hotel was decent enough - beats their fake 4 star "i-snow" hotel for less than half the price.
Clearly the highlight were the 20-40 cm deep powder stashes. Great and intense riding all in all, thanks again to their high speed lift. It snowed on both days, so we always had a fresh layer on the main slopes.
My advice: book your train tickets in advance. The best would be a soft sleeper leaving friday around midnight and arriving at 6:30. T'was fully booked but you can see how comfortable that would make the trip (we had to arrive the night before)
Good luck!

Re: 2009-2010 skiing season around Beijing
I was wondering what the highest mountain in north-east China was. Found it, Mount Wutai at 3058m+ altitude (Duh..). 400km from Beijing by car, Too bad it's a UNESCO world heritage site, would be ideal for a ski resort. Imagine the apres ski!
Bonus: there's already a cable car... anyone fancy doing some backcountry ridin' on mt wutai? what's the fine for digging your trace on a UNESCO site? lol

Hello,
we are arriving from Europe (Estonia) to Beijing on 24-th March. Are there some skiing resorts near Beijing, which are open at that time? Or we have to go/fly/drive to Harbin or to Jilin? We would like to go to Nokia Mellow Snowpark, because we have hear of that place. ..that this snowpark is the best snowpark in China
Thanks!
