your company needs you get a work permit,that's right, you just take the invitation letter(for work) and employment permit(in chinese 就业许可）leave China once(hk is ok),then come back to get the work permit.

The only legal visa work in Chiina is Z working visa, and there are two ways to apply for it:
First way: apply for employment licence, invitation letter and then hold them to apply for temporary Z outside Chiina mainland, when you are back, go on applying for employement certificate and a one-yr Z visa;
Second way: apply for employment licence, then change ur current spousal Z visa to a normal Z visa directly in China, then go on applying for employement certificate and a one-yr Z visa;

yes ,your spousal Z visa is a depend visa (your hunsband or your wife) ,if you work in one company ,you must have a z visa which must record in the psb ,and you will get:
1.a work permit
2.an work invitation letter
with 1.2 to hongkong or your country to get a short tiome z visa (one month 0 entry )and then come back to beijing
3.employment permit
4.residencial peimit (one year)
