So how is everybody studying Chinese on this forum?
How are you guys going about studying Chinese?
Let me start:
I studied at BLCU for almost a year (SARS put an early end to the academic year back then) and then for quite some time with private tutors.
Today, I dont take classes anymore, though I know I should, but just cant come up with the time. I do however, try to carry my dictionary around with me and look up characters I dont know. I also keep a Chengyu List on my desk, which I try to add stuff to as I hear it (the last one was心怀鬼胎).
Anyone else?

Not studying, don't like chengyu, don't speak much. What new words/expressions I learn is from online chat (msn/qq) with Chinese friends.

I've hated every Chinese class I've ever been in from BLCU to the defunct World Link so I usually quit after two weeks or so. For some reason Chinese teachers are always unable to explain grammar in their own language.
I just hang out with Chinese friends and ask lots of questions about words I don't understand so I get by fine in life and at the office. I can't read for sh*t though.

Very good, within limits. It got me to having conversations with people very quickly. It's especially good for pronunciation and speaking modern day-to-day stuff. (introductions, buying things, work, talking about the weather, eating/drinking, etc)
It is poor for grammar (because it is all in the language you learn and with images, there isn't any explanation) and understanding the structure of the language, no real hanzi training, and it doesn't really do any cultural context. So, that's why I do separate hanzi study, and read a lot on Chinese culture and history.

I usually use Wikipedia. It gives me a comprehensive view of worthless or not very useful Chinese anecdotes such as:

Making flash cards and work with one until I have it good in short term memory, then two in short term memory, then work with three flash cards. When working with three flash cards, after you go through them a few times, is no longer short term memory.
Then take out the card I know the best, and go through them again.
When I have a short stack of cards I know best, I go through that stack. Take out all the ones I know, and go through again.
This works well for me!

As the Chinese, I remember that the basic knowledge (PINYIN & Spell & Grammar) of Chinese language was spoon-feeding everyday during my childhood. But before of it, I can speak out the common words in order to express my needs. So I think to learn any foreign languages whether is Chinese or English, which have the same principle. Deeply desire can be helpful our memory of learning language, it can be forced you to use this language, especailly if you were already on the foreign environment. Learning the foreign language is really a hard work. Anyway it needs accumulate day by day.
Persist in the end is the final victory~~~Come On~~~
