Shame on you Wal-marts!

It was with fond memory that I wanted to designate Wal-mart as my weekly grocery store after I settled down in Beijing. I said so because I used to have great grocery shopping experience with Wal-mart in Virginia. It does offer low prices for the lower middle class workers of the American society. My first trip to Wal-mart in Wangjing taught me three things: home improvement items are pricey comparing to US. and it does not offer an in-house toilet, and the checking out counter is much shorter, no moving belt. One day, after having painstakingly selected the Christmas cards and other presents, I wanted to use the toilet urgently. I parked my shopping cart next to the cashier's area and left. 5 minutes later my cart was gone! None of the store clerks knew where my cart was! So I got furious and called out a manager. She explained to me if the cart was obviously deserted they would take the cart away and re-shelf the items in the cart. I was so angry that I spent much time selecting my merchandise and now i had to do it all over again! Of course,I did not care which cards to select anymore, I just grabbed a bunch of them and swore I would never come back to that store.

There is another Wal-mart in Wanda Square, I went there today after seeing Avatar in Wanda Cinema. I really wanted to designate that one as my official grocery store because it is on my way of daily commute. This store's cashier counter is pathetically short and for a mega store the counters are not enough! When i waited in line to check out, the cashier and her co-worker were handling a Chinese woman with three big boxes. Obviously something was going on and she had not paid. Nevertheless, I took my items on the counter and waited for the cashier to scan. Then this Chinese woman left the cashier and her cart and started making a phone call on the side. I was waiting...the clerks did not apologize and they were motionless...then i could not wait any longer so I asked the cashier to call out that woman who was still quacking on the phone. The cashier did not care, so I went to that woman and asked her to quickly check out so other people behind her could move on! She did not care, still quacking on the phone. I then went back to the cashier to ask her to scan my stuff. The answer was she could not re-set the register. Then I said i did not want these items anymore. They got panic and called out a manager. The manager came, reset the register. He said that woman had to re-queue after she's off the phone. No apologies, nothing. And that woman, still on the phone, totally ignoring what happened to me, to the cashier and most amazingly, to her merchandise!

So here's the Chinese Walmart, double standards, in US, the store is nicer, comfortable and the employees are professional. here, the store is just like a big local store, employees are not well trained, items not cheap. They want to integrate and localize, but these days, even the Chinese people themselves want international standard! Hey, Wal-mart China, you lost me as a loyal customer!

no-nonsense

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Ahh the shopping experience of Beijing.

I don't think they really give a f*** whether you come back or not nuc. It's unfortunate, but it's the truth. For every person they lose to sh*t service there's another 100 lining up to buy things.
It does surprise me though to see the way some places like this trade when there are so many obvious savings in operating costs which are completely ignored. If they worked like this in the West they would be out of business in a month.

Sometimes the same is different, but mostly, it's the same.

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Like every where in China they are overstaffed because staff are so cheap!
My particular beef with Walmart China are the expiry dates of perishable items which are frequently into the last month of a 3 month life for instance.

Men of all sorts take a pride to gird at me: the brain of this foolish-compounded clay, man, is not able to invent anything that tends to laughter, more than I invent or is invented on me.

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Yes, forgot to mention the perishable items! I bought US imported seedless grapes at a hefty price. i asked my Chinese nanny to wash them so we can eat. She said the grapes looked so rotten with mold, she would never give them to my child to eat!

no-nonsense

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Not just the over staffing as an issue, but so many others I see just with a quick walk through some places.

Sometimes the same is different, but mostly, it's the same.

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Wal-mart China is total clusterf***. Shopping there is an ordeal -and a non-stop retardathon. I don't know why anybody puts themselves through it.

I only shop at the few places in Beijing that don't give me writhing compulsion to commit homicide: My local morning market, 7-11, Jenny Lous/April Gourmet. That's it. I don't even contemplate entering other supermarkets any more.

When I said 'death' before 'dishonor', I meant alphabetically.

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Carrefour is even worse, small aisles and bigger trolleys with more cackling staff than customers, who block the aisles and pounce on you in the wine section.

Step 3: I have made a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of God as I understand Him.

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

The new Carrefour in Wanda Mall Shijingshan is OK. I go there for the Bread, their wine is too expensive...I buy mine wholesale for about 60% their prices, liquor about 75%.

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Some time ago I took a solemn oath to never, ever shop at a Wal*Mart anywhere in the world! Cowboy I'm certain their profits are suffering because of that too! Tongue

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Jenny Lous is the best, WalMart and Carrefour suck!!! Lines in Carrefour are sometimes a 30 minute wait in Haidian Huangzhuang. People everywhere, the most crowded places I have seen in Beijing, Chinese must love Walmart and Carrefour!

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

Yeah, dont got to Shaungjing Carrefour on the weekend without a drink or a valium in you.
Also their imported frozen section has been replaced with a load of crappy duck stuff. I want my shitty microwave pizzas dammit.

Re: Shame on you Wal-marts!

The jap one is not too bad, Ito Yokado or something and they usually have a lottera hamburger joint next to them which is better than Mackers, not as good as Burger King though.

Step 3: I have made a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of God as I understand Him.

I'm going to start rambling soon about Vanguard. What a bunch of pricks!
If there was ever business model for f-ing up a supermarket, these guys must have made it and perfected it.

I HATE the place.

But it's so close, and with Winter still lurking I only want a close walk for things.
