Bad Visa information from University?

I have been offered a job at a University in Chongqing, but they told me I have to return to my home country (US) in order to get a new Z Visa. I now have a residence permit with at least 2 months left on it. Plenty of time to go to Chongqing. Everyone I have talked to besides the University says that I simply need to go to Chongqing and have the school transfer my current visa, and that I do not need to leave the country. I think the school is wrong. Any advice? Thanks.

Get an F after your Residence Permit expires either from HK or mainland. Remember residence permits are multi entry so leaving China won't expire it. Nothing will, except time.

ask the local PSB, not school.
normally you will just need to change the emplyer of your work lisense. that need you to have: release letter from last employer. if you have that, and you have your own work lisense.
there shouldnt be any problems. go to the local labor bureau change your work lisense first then PSB to renew resident permit.

You can transfer or cancel your current Foreign expert certificate in Beijing and re-apply for a new Foreign expert certificate in Chongqing.
After that, you can extend your residence permit for work for another year.

If you work for a company or a representative office registered in China, you can get work permit/license (a piece of paper) and Alien Employment Permit (a booklet) in turn issued by China labor bureau when applying for a residence permit for work (work visa).
If you work for a school/university, you can get foreign expert license (a piece of paper) and foreign expert certificate (a booklet) in turn issued by Bureau of foreign experts affairs.
Some foreign experts in economy and technology, who work for companies can get foreign experts certificates, too.
