Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

I am half way through District 9.

You were right Blucat it is f-ing awesome.

My pic for best male actor so far, is Morgan Freeman.

But I have a lot of watching to go.

Some dumb New Zealand movie reviewer bitch was on Breakfast NZTV today, saying his acting was weak in this movie but that Matt Damon rocked.

That's good ol lil NZ for ya, the country that needs to be turned on its ass end, then shaken and stirred.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

The Oscars have been complete crap for two, three years now... and- even though I loved them growing up- the Oscars are meaningless to me now. Expecially since Mickey Rourke lost. Angry

Having said that....

Want win: Avatar (take that Confucius!)
Probably win: Hurt Locker (I thought it was a good movie, not Oscar-worthy though)
Would be okay if Up in the air won...

Remmy be pimpin' in BJ, yo!

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Yeah totally agree that Mickey Rourke should have won last year and Meryl Streep.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

I really liked Up In The Air as a whole, but I don't think I'd have it winning an Oscar for any particular category. Possibly my 3rd choice for best picture.

Not seen Invictus yet, might pop it in now.

Also really want to see Crazy Heart. Not seen it anywhere. Also not seen Avatar, but that'll probably win the main ones along with The Hurt locker. Husband v Ex-wife and all that.

Also the supporting gongs are more or less a foregone conclusion. I think they've won every award so far. Great performances both.

I thought you liked up?

Don't you say you resembled the little fat boy, Russell, in the movie?

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Uh oh, I can feel another Robert Black multiple ID accusation coming on.

Hey, Arex, I am comfortably drunk now, listening to good music.

Why would I bother?

Newsflash: people here use proxies and people other than me think you are a c**t. Sorry about that.

By the way, Inglorious Bastards your pic to win an Oscar are you for real?

So you have Jewish brood and Chinese brood huh?

Nice mix.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

I am just amazed a boy band crazed Chinese racist Brit claims he is a "proud EBC" then later claims he's not a EBC.

By my count he changed races more times than Michael Jackson.

Mikey maybe isn't so proud?

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Finally got around to seeing t=the Hurt locker.

Enjoyed it.

Cameron's ex has a good shot.

In the Foreign Film category, felt The Prophet was quite good.

And hey, what do ya know, Sandra Bullock!

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Up will probably pick up the win in most every category it's in.

Fantastic Mr. Fox turned out great, but Wes Anderson is a prick who had no passion for the film. The most redeeming factor was the greatness of the original book (and George Clooney did a great job, too).

I don't foresee Inglorious Basterds picking up any wins (tarantino is not really oscar type), except possibly Christopher Waltz. He rocked the hell out that role.

I feel like I should see Precious, because I have a feeling (from reviews I've read) that it's going to be the sweeper this year. It just has those qualities that the academy loves to give awards to. (Race, domestic abuse, self esteem problems, growing up somewhere poor.... you know, things that no one at the academy really knows anything about but figures must be difficult to go through.)

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

What the f*** do you think you're doing staying on topic, poodle humper?

You're supposed to post pictures of forum members and write insults that sound like they're uttered by a four-year-old.

I don't think Up will win the best picture category, but it will win best animated.

You're right, Inglourious Basterds will only win best supporting actor, and if you like it, you *must* be half-Jewish.

I thought Fantastic Mr Fox was great, though I tend to like Anderson.

I thought A Serious Man was a load of pretentious wank. The Coens could present a 90-minute still of a woman tweaking a moustache made out of dogshit and it would get nominated.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Stages of being "out of it"

1. You haven't seen every one of the movies nominated for Best Picture.

2. You haven't seen the majority of the movies nominated for Best Picture.

3. You haven't even heard of some of the movies nominated for Best Picture.

4. You haven't even heard of most of the movies nominated for Best Picture.

Unfortunately I have reached Stage 4, indicating I am terminal. Terminally out of it, so to speak.

Saw it:
Avatar
Up

Heard of it, haven't seen it:
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
Up in the Air

Never even heard of it:
District 9
An Education
A Serious Man
The Blind Side

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

I've only seen Avatar, Up, Inglorious Basterds and District 9, all of which were EXCELLENT and I'd be happy to see them win any awards.

If I had to choose one for best picture... damn I'm torn between Avatar and Inglorious Basterds.

Have to flip a coin.

Honesty

Empathy

Respect

Open-mindedness

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Yea, I don't know about Avatar, either. The story didn't have the punch that best picture movies usually do.

But it could very well sweep the rest of the awards it's nominated for (especially the visual ones, for obvious reasons).... cinematography, visual effects, art direction, sound mixing, maybe even directing.

Don't feel too bad, admin, I'm in stage 2...

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Animated should go to Coraline.

A Serious Man wasn't half bad. If you think otherwise, then you must be anti-Semitic and most likely equipped with a small uncut-penis limp as tofu. And AIDS!

Films I haven't seen yet:

District 9
An Education
The Blind Side
Nine
Crazy Heart
The Last Station
Invictus
The Messengers
Julie & Julia

No, it was crap. Perhaps not crap, just self-indulgent, pretentious pseudo-intellectual camera cack. maybe I just didn't *get* it, being a culturally challenged pom.

I'm not anti-semitic, that is is so far off track you would be embarrassed to learn the truth. Silly

The small penis/tofu thing, however, is correct, as is the AIDS thing.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

I've seen everything except Julie and Julia and The Blind Side.
Yes, I want a cookie.

How did Bullock get a nomination???

Remmy be pimpin' in BJ, yo!

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Because she's outstanding in that movie.

You've seen Crazy Heart? Where? How?

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Sure, A Serious Man was not exceptional. It was no No Country. Still not bad though.

It got the nod because the Coens are Jews!!!!!!

Quote:
How did Bullock get a nomination???

Because she's a JEW!!!!!!!!!!

OK, we're at five coffees now.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

I liked "Up In The Air" because it didn't go for the smarmy feel-good ending they had been telegraphing for the middle hour or so of the film. It's rare Hollywood does not insult your intelligence. The film was adult enough to admit that some stories don't have happy endings, but it's nothing to cry over.

Anti-Semitic!? C'mon! Get off the self-pity jag (assuming you're Jewish. If you're not, come off the other guy's self-pity jag.) I liked the film. It wasn't great, but it was pretty damn good. That said, I know any number of people whom it would bore the sh*t out of. Matter of taste is all.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Can't get into it this year.

Invictus was crap.

Turned off A Serious Man after five minutes.

Loved District 9!!!

Up in the Air was so so at best as was Inglorious Bastards.

Avatar will win all the sh*t so who cares.

And Sandra Bullock cannot act for sh*t.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hurt_Locker

The Hurt Locker opens with a quotation from War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, a best-selling 2002 book by New York Times war correspondent and journalist Chris Hedges: "The rush of battle is a potent and often lethal addiction, for war is a drug."

i know this is a thread about movies, but if anyone cares to read this book, it is very good and an excellent and sad insight in to modern american war.

Trust me, it's so danger.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

No votes for Steven Segal's "Cockpuncher!"?

So...how many did you get right?

I got them all right, as usual. Give or take one or two...

Best picture
The Hurt Locker

Directing
The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow)

Actress in a supporting role
Mo’Nique in Precious

Actor in a supporting role
Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds

Actor in a leading role
Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart

Oh my God... Sandra Bullock won?

That's just... terrible.

Formulatic crap.

"No, he's changing mine."

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Silly

Well, except for Coraline.

And what's this about Sandra's win being Bollocks?

I thought she did a fine job, though i'll admit she's usually pure shite.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Yeah, out of the lot of them, I think she deserved to win. That Mulligan chick will get her chance, Streep's nom is a matter of course, and Precious is fat and black and the Oscars are RACIST and WEIGHTIST.

Plus Bullock had the good grace to turn up to the Razzies and pick up her award for worst film t'other night.

I say fair play.

Re: Oscar Nominations 2010

Yeah I forgot all about Mulligan. So far I've only seen her in An Education, but from what I saw, she's something special.

ps: hate to go on and on about Coraline, but if any of you still haven't seen it, do check it out. It's really good.
