Sherlock Holmes
I just saw Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes." The problem isn't the shitty casting (Robert Downey as SHERLOCK HOLMES fer Our Lord's sakes!) The problem isn't that the film is "Spiderman" without masks and spidey-powers. The problem isn't that it's the sort of tale only a fourteen year old wanker would like. The problem is it's the kind of tale a fourteen year old wanker would WRITE.

Re: Sherlock Holmes
I enjoyed it.
I watched it after having heard nothing about it. It was a complete surprise to me. They couldn't go too wrong with the whole thing really.
There's another in the works and I'd like to see it roll on for a few more.
I like Ritchie's movies. I'm waiting for the next Rock 'n' Rolla.
Sometimes the same is different, but mostly, it's the same.

Re: Sherlock Holmes
It is always a sign of the actors career.
I half watched arguably the worst movie I had ever seen last night with a very young Liam Neeson on TV as it was in English.
He turned into some weird monster or something.
Just could not imgaine him going from that movie to Schindler's List.
Odd business, is the movie business.

Re: Sherlock Holmes
Guy Ritchie is probably not all that in after Madonna dumped him.
Or did he dump her?
Johnny Depp did a great job in that Jack the Ripper movie.
Was he playing Holmes?

Re: Sherlock Holmes
after watching all the old Classics Sherlock Holmes movies as a child and growing up, all recent attempts are well of the mark and do not portray the feeling of Sherlock Holmes, they might as well call them something else.
But if you have never seen the oldies I could see why you would take this film on face value.
But its not Sherlock Holmes.

Re: Sherlock Holmes
No.
I watched all the Sherlock Holmes movies when I was a kid and I loved it. The old ones were ok, but the rejuvenated Holmes was excellent, and Downey Jr was outstanding. The old ones were a bit too stiff-upper-lip-Brit for my liking.
It was supposed to be a young Holmes and he nailed it.
It's not supposed to be deep, it's just an action whodunnit, and at that it was superb.
Yes, it is worth seeing at the cinema.

Ok ,thank you.

Re: Sherlock Holmes
Exactly.
Everyone who grew up reading the stories or watching the older movies wouldn't have been expecting it maybe.
I would have been disappointed with anything else. Who wants to watch a rehash of every other version. It was a fresh take.
Renee - It is cinema worthy, but not in the way I'd class some other movies which are better viewed on the big screen for the vista and sound effects. Though for some of the scenes it would be worth it.

For the love of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Baskerville's hound, NO! Buy a cheap, pirated DVD if you must. Then you'll have something to break when you realize you wuz robbed.

Re: Sherlock Holmes
I love Ritchie. That's why I loathed this. It struck me as being neither Holmes nor Ritchie. Holmes comes across as simply pathological and there's very little indication how he pulls his rabbits out of the hat. Watson, I allow, isn't bad. An improvement on the bumbling klutz you get in classic films. My big problem is the story. It's too, well, American. "Hero Saves The Whole World From Madman." Ritchie is usually fun, not a silly twat. Nothing in common there with the spirit in which the Holmes tales were written. If they want a "new take" on Holmes, do the obvious thing: let on that he and Watson were gay. We've all been expecting this anyway.

Re: Sherlock Holmes
Exactly. No feel for Holmes. No feel for Conan Doyle. No feel for the period. It's like "Wild, Wild West Goes to London."
