US passport about to expire, what do I need to know?
Yep. What it says on the box. My passport's done in June, my spousal L visa in April, and I can't get a new one without a new passport. So, what do I need to know? What's the process? I've heard that getting a new passport might be faster if I report it stolen? Does it take 2 months and a gajillion visits to the embassy like I've been privy to on other forums if I just apply for a new one? Will I get to keep my old one in case I need to prove residency, or will I have to surrender it and get some other papers? Please to make with the advices.

I went through this six months ago, and I'm happy to report it's relatively painless.
First, you'll need to make an appointment at the embassy; I forget exactly how that's done but the embassy website gives fairly easy instructions.
You can download the necessary application form from the website; complete it before you go. It's short and simple. You'll need new passport photos: make sure you get the right size; they want bigger than the old ones. Again, the form will provide you the size info as well as a frame as a guideline.
Once at the embassy, you'll have a relatively short wait; when called, you give them the form, surrender your old passport, and pay the fee. They'll give you a receipt which will serve as your ID in the meantime.
Then they'll email you when it's ready, and they're very quick. I got mine in five days. Once you get the email, return to the embassy anytime--no appointment needed. They'll give you the new PP along with your old one, which they punch holes in to void it.
Another caveat: Carry both passports with you if you plan on travelling within China before leaving the country. Hotels must verify your entrance stamp which, of course, will only be in your old PP until you leave and re-enter the country.
You will need to get a new visa for your new passport; that's handled the usual way at the PSB which I assume you are familiar with. Just make sure you have both the old and new passports with you when you go.
Technically, you should re-register your residency at the police station too, otherwise the passport numbers won't match.
