Re: Climbing Buddies/Community???
Amanda,
There is a small, but strong climbing community in Beijing. The best way to meet people is thru visiting one of the climbing walls. There is an indoor wall called Ole in Guomao--it has a dozen routes on a non-textured wall and a nice bouldering area. My favorite wall is the outdoor one inside of Ritan park--it has three large sections, one straight up, one overhanging and a slight overhanging wall better for endurance training. the bouldering area is smaller, but the place can't be beat if the weather is right. Also, Ritan tends to have a good group of workers that will belay a single climber, so there is no need to have a partner.
If you are here to improve your language skills, there are a couple clubs in the Wu...one more famous club is the Peking University Mountain Association. They take weekend trips to the area's better crags, like Baihe, Huairou and Shidu. (If you have lead climbing gear and a partner, these areas can be reached by bus via the Dongzhimen Bus station and then a rented breadvan). Just walk onto Beida's campus from the east gate by the new line 5 subway, take a right at the first major road and walk towards the lake. The lake will be on your left and you'll see a climbing wall across from the NE corner of the lake. They have open climb times in the early afternoon.
Good luck...PM me if you have more ??s.

Hi Amanda,
How did you go finding a climbing buddy? I've been in Beijing for 3 months and I'm really keen to get back into climbing. I'm planning a trip to climb in Yangshuo early June and I need some wall practice before I go. Have you climbed at Ritan Park yet? Let me know if you're free for a climb.

Re: Climbing Buddies/Community???
Is the Ole Climbing still running? Can't access their website, phone is not in use and no responds to emails. I would like to take a bunch of teenagers to climb and boulder for a day somewhere.
I a world of iPods... No-one can hear you scream

Re: Climbing Buddies/Community???
Ole should still be open. They're pretty solid. Maybe they're on vacation.
I'm from Detroit, moving to Beijing mid-June for the next year, maybe two, so if anyone is looking for a consistent climbing partner, I am totally up for it! Send me a message!

Re: Climbing Buddies/Community???
Any trad climbers? Guo Liang is in Henan and convenient enough for weekend trips from Beijing. But it's better to stay a few days more to get on some of the long routes.

Re: Climbing Buddies/Community???
There are more than 100 sport and a handful of known trad routes around Baihe. You will be in the middle of it in less than 2 hours even without your own transportation.

Check out these guys if you want to get out of the city, though technically still in Beijing. They do trips to Miyun regularly. They require at least 4 people for a trip to operate though. They've just started running trips, but they seem pretty sound.
You can check out their website at this link...
