Ridiculous 麻烦 for American passports

I just want a cheap way to stay in China and possibly work freelance but a reasonable visa fee seems unattainable. I was going switch my Z work permit to an F, but was told by several people it's cheaper for me to just renew the Z. Although I don't think this is legal since I'm no longer employed. I was quoted 6500-9000rmb to renew my Z visa.
Other agents told me to go to HK, the cost + flight seems to be about $350. Then renew it immediately when back in Beijing (since you can only stay in country for 30days). A 6month is around 4500rmb, 1 year is 6500rmb. So we end up back in the same price range of just under 9000rmb to stay in China for 1 year.
My question is has any American gotten a 1 yr F visa multiple entry under 5000rmb? Surely someone must have figured out the system here and found the easiest and cheapest way. I've read a lot of the posts in this forum but seems mostly just agents replying and their prices are as stated above... I'm more than happy to go to the PSB myself and not use an agent but I'm pretty sure the PSB requires some kind of work info if extending an F visa.

If you want to extend your Z visa, you should ask for Release Letter and Cancellation Letter of the Employment License from the former company.Then you can either find a new company or visa agent to do work visa renewsl.
Finding a visa agent to help you do visa doesnt mean it is illegal, it can provide sponsorship for you.
If you want to change it to F, you must go out to apply F with a Business Invitation Letter, then just as you stated above,extend it for 6 months or 1 yr.
You can extend your work visa without leaving, but if you want to change it to another types of visa, you have to go out of China to get a new one.

Yes, I have the release & cancellation letter. But the renewed Z visa would state sponsorship from a agent that I don't actually work for. That's why I don't feel it's 100% legal. But when in Rome...
I'm just wondering which will be cheapest & easiest now and in the long run. If I keep the Z or get an F?

Hi Grace,
As you said, if you ask a agency with Z renew, that means ur sponsor will b the agent's company, the next yr if you wanna renew it, there are two possbilities: if you find a job later, then go on asking ur employer to renew it for you or you will have to keep agency sponsor you with the renew which will probably cost the same;
About F visa, since ur holding z now, the first time to get a F visa which might cost similar as Z renew but ul have to go outof China mainland frist, and for F visa, u can stay in China for 1yr at most since ur last entry, so that means at least ul have to leave China maind each yr. but extension will cost less than Z renew.

But if any company wants to hire me in the meantime, they'd have to switch me right away to a Z visa since they are not the sponsor?
But if I have an F, then they have to for sure switch me to a Z right away, yes? Which means I might have wasted my own $ if I get employed within the next month or so huh...

if a comepany can sponsor you ,they just can provide some documents for you ,such as the business lisence and approval of certificate ,contract and so on .And then you can apply for the Z visa .

Yes, ur right, if a company wanna hire u later, they can switch F to Z but that wont b done in a few days, lets say only procedure will take 26 working days all together, so u canot wait for them with an expired visa, so u can extend ur F to like we say 6months so u wont wait that much n at the same time, you have enough time to find a employer n also with appliation of Z, or if u still dont wanna an employer just go on extending the F visa, its the best way for you now.

Would you never be hired by any company in China? If you are a Z visa holders, you can find a job easily cause some companies are concern about the visa type which their emploees holding.
You should find another job within the valid period. Then renew the Z visa. This is the cheapest way for you to get another 12 months valid stay.
Furthermore, if you really can not find a sponsorship now, we can help you to renew your Z visa. But it will be more expensive than the sponsorship by yourself.
Hope you can get the Z visa renewed by the cheapest way.

Fraud! In the end Maggie will steal your money and you'll end up with no visa.
It is not true that you can open up any type of cheap business and get a "Z" visa. First, there are minimum capital requirements as well as restrictions on what business areas you are eligible for.
Although illegal, it is much easier and cheaper to just buy a "Z" visa through an agent.

Working on a "Z" visa for anybody but the entity which is your sponsor is illegal.
