Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
lol, well, the court is out on that one, but it does show that the original is still considered by someone to be a great movie if it's worth being remade.
I just hope they did it right.
Karate Kid do, OK

Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
I know the new one will never replace the old one in my heart but I can't wait to see the new one. If the trailers represent it well it should be wonderful.
I love this kind of movie. The perfect American movie. The Hero, the beautiful girl and the triumph of good over evil. Yeah!!!

Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
You're such a philistine Zhenlai.
The reason Karate Kid is great is that it is NOT a perfect American movie with the triumph of good over evil.
The characters are portrayed as real people with issues of their own-no Hollywood cardboard style goodies and baddies.
OK, so that's done in a pretty simplistic way at times ("You're alright Larouso") but it's pretty convincing at others "Fighting doesn't solve anything" "Yeah, well neither does palm trees ma")
It's a classic alright.

I knew I could count on you to lower yourself to the dregs of the rubbish of the forum. Thanks for the criticism and you have a nice day. Thank you for playing. And, now for our next contestant.

Oh Zhenlai, by the "standards" of this forum, what I said is practically a compliment!

Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
You do realize that this time the "beautiful girl" is like 10 years old, right?
As a huge fan of the original, I think they made a mistake by moving younger. And casting Will Smith's kid. And by remaking the original.
Now if you excuse me, I am going to go out and SWEEP THE LEG!!!

So the black kid beats the Chinese kid?
Now that's serious grounds for a banning.

Ah, is that the Will Smith one?
Some kids from my school are in that movie.

Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
The kid is the problem. Too young and may not be able to act, hard to tell from the trailer. Also, I pray to god Jackie Chan doesn't learn hip-hop (again) from the kid, ala Rush Hour.
I don't mind them moving the location to Beijing.
Actually, that kinda makes it a Karate Kid II remake. Hmm...
And I'm kinda anti-Chan at the moment too.
No-one could ever replace Pat Morita.
Here's a reason why the original is SO great-> (just after the fight) it's a 5-minute scene WITHOUT CUTS that goes from Daniel waking up after being beaten, through Miyagi-philosphy, through to accepting Daniel as his student.
Beautiful.
So many great lines just in this one scene:
"Smell bad, heal good."
"You too much T.V."
"Now use head for something other than target."
"For you good idea, for me good idea not get involved."
"What kind of belt do you have?" "Canvas."
"In Okinawa belt only good for hold up pants."

Great acting too.

Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
The best part of The Karate Kid is when Daniel says, "I'm being your Goddamn slave", then Miyagi shows him what he has learned from washing and waxing the cars, sanding the deck and painting the fence.
That was a truly inspiring scene.
"Go home, come back tomorrow, start early"

It starts around the 5th minute.

Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
As a kid I never saw that coming.
I thought that Miyagi was just being a task-master.
When he showed Daniel the real purpose, it almost blew my mind.
Kids now would see that crap coming a mile away.

Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
I showed this clip to a group of 5th graders today and they were left in horror. I thought they would see Jackie Chan and get all excited, but NO, these kids were horrified about how the Chinese boys were presented in the clip. They also told me that Jackie was no "Gung Fu" guy and that, in no uncertain terms, Jet Li was the real "Gung Fu" guy.
Chinese nationalism is a disease and it must be stamped out. I wonder if we can get Obama to add something to his health bill to deal with the dangerous effects of Chinese Nationalism.

Is Chinese nationalism any different to any other countries nationalism?
To be honest, i think some countries would benefit from a little more nationalism.

Nationalism is disgusting.
Actually believing that your country is somehow better than other countries? That's a really stupid, arrogant way to look at the world.
When will people learn that they are not part of a "nation", they are part of the "world".
We're all humans, borders and countries are created by evil governments.

Re: The Karate(?) Kid (2010) trailer
I will catch grief for this but I'm going to say it anyway. Another perfect American movie, Good versus evil and true love conquers all
It was truly a remake. The deviations from the REAL one were slight and of no consequence. There was too much brutality but I suppose I can get beyond that since the good guy did win in the end.
I truly enjoyed it but we well see how it is received here.

Another reason why the original was so much better (i.e. perfect) was Daniel's birthday present.
Every single kid in the theatre knew which one he'd pick, of course.
That was one aspect of the original that gave it so much heart. It wasn't just about training for the tournament/winning.
