Vehicle Import

I heard some rumors that a foreigner, legally employed (aka have a valid alien work permit) are allowed to import one vehicle duty free.

Not sure if this is true, and where to find out so figured I'd drop a line here.

If this is possible, some more questions regarding this:

1) Will one be allowed to sell the vehicle (or at least give it away for free, just transfer ownership)?
2) Do you *have* to import a vehicle from your own country? (that would be a show stopper, as in my country we have right-hand steering).

Regards

ps: No advice required on buying locally, thanks.

Re: Vehicle Import

It's possible, but extremely tricky and in many/most cases not worth it.

It's not as simple as "foreigners can import a car duty free"

There are certain foreigners that can-three groups I believe.

However even for them, look at a tax bill of about 40%.

Do some googling and you will find several sites that go into detail-a quick browse of those and you will see how complex it is.

Re: Vehicle Import

Regarding importing a vehicle here, blucat is right - it is pretty tricky and expensive. I have a friend who brought in a Pontiac Trans-Am from the US. By the time he was able to drive in on the streets of Beijing, he had damn near doubled the cost of the car.
If you want to get hold of this guy, let me know and I'll see about passing on his phone number. He can give you the lowdown on bringing in a car and all the hassles involved.
My advice - buy locally and save yourself hassles, time and money.
