What's the deal with motorbikes in Beijing?

I'm thinking of investing in a motorbike (petrol not electric) but not sure what the deal is, so a few questions hopefully someone can help answer

a/ is it legal for a foreigner to buy/own/register one?
b/ what sort of license is needed (i only have UK car license at the moment)?
c/ are there restrictions on where/when you can ride in beijing?
d/ i've been told if the motorbike is under 50cc (which apparently you can now get 48cc models) no license is needed, fact or fiction?

thanks for the help guys!!

Re: What's the deal with motorbikes in Beijing?

There used to be loads of foreigners riding sidecar bikes while looking for a fence to jump.

Re: What's the deal with motorbikes in Beijing?

i'm not interested in sidecars or jumping fences. Just want a little bike to zoom to work and back every day... small and simple... but prefer petrol over electric

anyone with practical advice??

Yes it is, I own one.

you need Chinese drive license "C1E" it's very important the last "E" that means you can as well drive motorcycle.

c/ are there restrictions on where/when you can ride in beijing?

there are 2 kind of plates you can have in beijing, A and B, with the B plate you can only ride outside 5th ring road, A plate you can ride everywhere, but never inside the ringroad, still ok to ride on the highways such as the one that go to the airport.

In this case the law turn out to be very strange, some models are ok like the dragonfly, but this model it's not allowed in beijing, anyways police can do anything about those things they're legal, other models like honda dio or yamaha jog are ilegal.

thanks for the help guys!!

You're welcome!!

Re: What's the deal with motorbikes in Beijing?

I'm in the same boat as you - I have tried to find information about getting a bike but it is difficult to get an answer - and a lot of the answers seem to conflict each other.

However, I did see a load of guys on bikes with sidecars yesterday - they are an organised group who do tours around here on ancient bikes with sidecars. The guy in charge, Yves, seemed pretty knowledgeable about the whole deal with bikes and plates etc.

Check out his website (http://www.beijingsideways.com/flyer_ENG.html) and get in touch with him - they know the location of a load of bike shops so they may be able to help you to get on the road sooner rather than later!

Hope this helps - if it does let us know how you get on and what you find out.

Re: What's the deal with motorbikes in Beijing?

I just moved to Beijing from Xian, I brought with me my Qing Qi 200 with me. I'm also kind of in the same boat so to speak. I've been riding around for over two years without plates and license’s. Now that I'm here in Beijing I think it’s high time to get legit. I live outside the fifth ring road but would like to take some trips into the city on a nice day and have heard about the "A" and "B" plates. I would also like to find out where the bike shops are.

And for those of you that are interested, I found this web site a while ago and there's lots of help on this sight as well...

I'm off to jump some fence's...
