Good and inexpensive health check.

Hey All,

I'm about to embark on some lifestyle changes and I thought it would be best if I got a health check up first to see where I'm at. Does anybody know a good and inexpensive place for a health check up? And preferably they speak English?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

SOS or Beijing United. Both English. BJU does tailored check-ups as well.

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

you're unlikely to find any clinic/hospital that is both cheap and english-speaking.... pick one or the other.

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

BJU is expensive but if you are really concerned about your health, I'd suggest going there.

I've had health checks at local clinics that specialize in the state-mandated health checks necessary for employment here in Beijing and they really are pretty much a sham -- if you've got something wrong with you, they ain't gonna find it out

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

The visa physical is mandatory and costs what, 600 RMB or something? When was the last time you had one of those?

If not, wefrucar is dead on. Navigate a local Chinese hospital with a fluent friend or shell out for one of the international providers. Western prices for 'Western' care.

I also agree with Admin. United Family would be my preference for a full physical. I believe Mike Wester did an article about check-ups in the Beijinger and featured this hospital too. BJU is very good with physicals. Alternatively, yes, there is SOS, but both are expensive.

Both of those places are very good and I feel very well taken care of when visiting them but they are just too expensive! You can't have it both ways. My last illness was broncaitis and I just could not let go of 2000rmb or more for the health check, chest xrays, etc so I finally went to a local hospital, (Haidian Hospital) took a fluent friend with me and low and behold it was not so bad. Seemed clean and modern and good doctors, no way I could have done with out a Chinese speaking friend, mainly because it is like shopping in a mall, you go from one counter to the next, paying all along the way a different fee at each station.

Best news of course is that it was under 300rmb in total!!! Blood test, chest x-ray, doctor consultation, and medication, what a deal!! haah

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

Right, but we're talking about check-ups, not treatment for an acute condition. They were diagnosing you, not doing a check-up. A physical is very different from going in to get bronchitis treated. You go in for a full check-up when nothing's wrong with you to SEE if something's actually wrong with you, like a chronic condition or something else that needs attention. What Admin is saying and I agree with is that local Chinese hospitals aren't that great at doing these full physicals.

If you want to talk about cost, that's a completely different issue. International providers are so expensive as to be prohibitive unless you have some form of international insurance.

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

Both SOS and BJU are good, of course, but don't forget the other clinics IMC and Vista. In terms of a youngish person looking for a normal annual physical exam, all expat clinics offer essentially the same evaluations by expat docs, with the same lab tests, about for the same cost. All have special "premium physicals", but honestly if you're young, you should just sign up for a normal doc visit (700-1000RMB) and see what tests the docs think you should get, based on age and sex. There's definitely no automatic need to spend 4,000+RMB on annual physicals. Young women definitely should be getting routine pap smears -- this is not yet very routine in China.

But I do agree that getting a routine physical at a more local clinic is more unreliable, mostly because their emphasis is almost always on testing. Really, 80-90% of diagnosis is through a thorough interview of your history, as well as the physical exam. I've had 4,000+RMB physicals at the industrial-size Ciming "exam" centers, and no one anywhere asked me simple questions about my medical history, and no one even listened to my heart or lungs. They just shuffle you along from lab test to lab test. It's a terrible, ineffective way to practice medicine.

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

Thanks for the info. I had a local friend tell me that Sino-Japan hospital might be ok for this. I think i'm going to give them a call and see what the procedures are regarding a physical.

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

United has a membership that includes a free annual physical with the works, and 20% (maybe 25%) off all fees and medications.

I bought one because it was about the same cost to do so and get the discount on what I'd originally gone in for than to just pay full price.

I think it's something like 1500RMB per year.

That's interesting, as the Ciming exam package we get through work (cost is around 1100 RMB if you were to pay for it yourself) included a doctor listening to your breathing, as well as ECG, blood analysis, urine analysis, abdominal ultrasound, eye checkup, fat density, male/female specific exam, a finger up the poo hole, some holistic thing which I didn't totally understand, and chest x-ray (which I opted out of).

I will agree that these clinics, as well as the hospitals here (including the expensive expat ones) are all about making money. And if you have a pre-existing medical condition, you're best off seeing a doctor. But for most of us, these annual exams are better than what we had back home (no exams until it's time to buy life insurance).

Where did he take you?

This is to serve as a reference for future searches, rather than to respond specifically to any posters' questions here.

I went to the Haidian hospital (海淀医院) a few days ago for a physical, and they happened to have everything laid out pretty clearly. If you can speak some Chinese or if you can bring a Chinese-speaking friend with you, then going to Haidian Hospital is a good bet for a basic physical. It is located right next to HaiDianHuangZhuang (海淀黄庄) subway stop: Take exit A1 and it is less than 100 meters to the west. It cost me just over 100RMB for the basic health check, although options involving more tests run all the way up to more than 1000RMB.

Here are the pics I took of the tests and pricing:

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

is haidian hospital good for vaccinations too??

Re: Good and inexpensive health check.

I've been going to an American doctor of Chinese descent (is that correct, Zhenlai?) at United for the last 2 years.

She's very good. Hot, too.

Except now I can't remember her name.

So I guess my post is useless. Never mind.
