Had one of the best since I've been in Beijing at this tiny place less than a block from home that I've probably walked past 100 times.
These little holes-in-the-wall always seem to have staff that know what they're doing better than the expensive places like at the 5-star hotels. And usually like a tenth of the price, too. Hidden gems!
My new rule is to avoid any joint that advertises in English. I'm almost always pleasantly surprised at these dives.
Unless the decor and ambience is a big deal to you, they're the only way to go.

My favorite massage place, a few minutes walk from home and inexplicably hidden behind a big concrete wall, offers two-hour massages for 66 RMB. Blows my mind.
. If I tell them to go softer, they insist that this way is better.
I feel like a whiny bitch when I go there, though. The water for your feet is boiling hot, and they always use way too much pressure
Admittedly, I do sleep like a baby that night.... but it does seem to defeat the purpose of a relaxing experience.
Most hole-in-the-wall parlors (that are legit, that is) still have fully trained staff, you just sacrifice general ambiance. Yet I have to disagree on one point..... because the best massage I've had in BJ is still one of those overpriced expat-catering places, Boddhi...

Yeah, some of them really dig into the tissue...but I never say anything for fear of looking like a pussy. I think the best ones are trained to check if you're grimacing or otherwise showing signs of discomfort.
I was at a typical dive in Sichuan awhile back, and the girl happened to notice this raging ingrown toenail of mine. It was so goddamn painful, I'd been refusing my wife's pleas to go to the doctor because the idea of anyone getting near it with a knife scared the hell out of me. I'd never had one before, and I'd been trying to just ride it out for about 3 months, which, I've since learned, is rarely possible.
Anyway, without asking me, this woman starts digging into my toe with a scalpel. I start screaming, telling her to stop--that's how painful it was--but managed to keep my foot still. It was absolutely the most pain I've ever been in.
Thank God she didn't listen to me, because after 45 seconds or so of hell, she finishes and I can immediately tell she's fixed it. I probably should have been pissed, but the relief was so great I was actually grateful. I do believe she
The only thing is, she then went back to the massage and there was no way I was going to be able to relax and enjoy it after trauma like that.
Anyway, I'll have to check out Boddhi next time I get a chance.

actually, guys do it best in my experience

I guess because they're stronger, they don't feel the need to use as much localized pressure and there's less "digging."
Plus it's usually only guys who are able to pull your arms and neck and lift you up off your back, cracking it in locations you didn't know existed
That and they don't start gabbing on and on at you when you're trying to relax.
The few times I ended up with a guy giving the massage, they've been really above average.
Still.... in the end... I'd rather my masseuse be a cute girl

I always feel like a d*** telling the blind guys to use more pressure so I usually stick with seeing people.
There's a good hole in the wall across the street from Tian Feng Li shopping center near the He Ping Xi Chao station. If you buy a card I think foot massage is like 40RMB for 90 minutes. I haven't been there in a while.
They do body massage too, but I forget how much.
