English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
are they just tattooed backpackers who cant find a job at home? how many of them are truly qualified teachers who take their job seriously? probably only a handful.
i think china (like hong kong) should ask for qualified teachers with degrees and qualified teacher status instead of taking in these uncomitted backpackers.

To get a work permit in China, one must be at least 24 years old, have a B.A., and---in Beijing---have an ESL certificate. Likewise, a clean bill of health is required (e.g., no HIV, among other things.) I believe one must also now provide evidence of a clean criminal record.
Once again you attack people who do not know on grounds of which you are ignorant. In short, once more you show you do not know your a-hole from your elbow.

Re: English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
that is not the hard and fast rule. some provinces dont require a BA. in fact, this rule was only implemented 3-4 years ago. before that, any secondary school dropout could teach in china.
even today, plenty of backpacker "teachers" teach on f visas which you can buy for 1000 yuan. the typical interview for an english teaching job in china consist of a skype conversation. if you can speak basic english you are in! no grammar/vocab tests.
a tefl certificate can be earned in one month part time. some even one weekend. just a peice of non govt accredited paper that has the same standing as my toilet paper.
i think they should require at least a BA in education/ESL or BA in anything + PG dip in education/MA TESOL. like hong kong.

OK, I got it. Foreigners are at fault because your government has insufficient regulation and because it does not and cannot enforce the laws it does have. Poor China, ravished by the foreign devils yet again! Good thing you're defending the land. (Where can I buy a statue of you? You know, like those little 关公 idols? I wanna burn incense in front of it. Imbue me with your indomitable spirit.)

By the way, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. You're going to get in trouble, writing "Taiwan/China/Thailand etc." It implies all are separate countries. (你就是反革命的!)

Re: English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
every chinese person knows taiwan is not part of china currently.
we treat taiwan as part of china normally but we know it is not back under china yet. only a matter of time though. foregone conclusion.

i think once china has enough fluent english speakers to go around it should kick these backpacker teachers out. they can earn their beer money by working at walmart or tesco

Well, qualified teachers from the west don't want to work in Chinese education and it has little to do with salaries on offer.
Go figure.

Re: English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
I agree, Taiwan is a part of China and will be under the Beijing government one day. But, in fact, Taiwan is not treated as part of China. You need special documentation to go there. Chinese military fly-overs would meet with gunfire. The government in Beijing collects no taxes from there. I can go on. My point was simply that I have known foreigners to get in trouble for the very same error you just made, O Native Son: referring to Taiwan as a separate entity. For a wee wanker who jumps all over others' tiniest slips, your face should be pretty red now, eh wot?

I think the government told him to move to Taiwan. That way while he is still Chinese, they do not have to deal with him until the indefinite future.

Re: English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
You can always look at Taiwan in this vein: Taiwan is China and one day when the breakaway provinces are deemed worthy Taiwan will bring them back into the fold.
I agree that one day the two entities will become united but it will take more effort of change from this side of the straits than from their side of the straits.

most chinese acknowledge that taiwan is a seperate entity. most of my friends dont even care. we will just let the smart chinese govt do their thing. we are confident that taiwan will be back under china soon because even the americans dare not defend taiwan anymore. they piss in their pants just seeing how strong china's military is.

Taiwan may never allow the breakaway provinces to come back if they keep going the way they are going. There is nothing that can be gained for them to take the breakaway provinces back.

Re: English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
China needs all the English teachers it can get because the level of spoken English in China is absolutely terrible, also you have the unfortunate fact of having, oh 1.3 billion people. I don't think the backpackers will be leaving for a while.
Also if Japan is anything to go by, people 'who can't get a job back home' will mean that China will be recruiting travellers for a long time, so get used to it.

Re: English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
yes indeed. many of these "english teachers" are nothing more than a working holiday maker. some like zhenlai have issues and drug damaged brains. it is disturbing really.

Re: English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
I was paid $48,000 a year teaching in the U.S. That's like 350,000 yuan. What teacher works just as much or less than I did and makes 30,000 yuan a month teaching in China. Not going to be happening. So I wish you very bad luck in your whole life CN"44"longshao for crying and acting like a little bitch about a privledge you have with someone who cares enough to teach you English. Not being able to learn english could be another thing you could be missing out of in this world.

you should be glad someone gives losers like you a chance to enter their country and pay you money just to act like a clown and speak english.
with english being the official language in 55 countries out of 180 or so, there are more english speakers than atmospheric oxygen.
pathetic.

Re: English teachers in taiwan/china/thailand/korea
Did you just go insane? Mandarin is spoken by around 15% of the world's people. (China has about 20% of the world's population, but a number of Chinese really don't speak Putonghua.) Some U.S. business grad programs require study of the language.. It's in no sense a dead language. Besides, you obviously know history. When was ANYTHING ever "forever"? Even Hitler only promised a thousand tear reign for the Krauts.
Obviously your hatred for China is becoming pathological. There is no need to insult the people at every turn. You claim to be anti-government. You show yourself an enemy of the Chinese themselves. The only terms on which you are willing to deal with them is if they sell-out and become Western wannabees. This is pretty full of hybris and downright ugly.
