Short term teaching - L or F visa?

Here's my situation:

* I want to travel to China for maybe three months, or more.
* I want to teach English part time but do not want to enter into an employment contract.
* I am in Los Angeles.
* I need to get my Visa quickly.

Questions:

1. I think that it will be easiest just to get a tourist visa. However, when I had this before, I had to renew it every month. Is that still the case?

2. Is it possible to get and F visa from the US? I know I can get one for 6 months, right? However, I am not connected to any sponsor, so I am not sure if I can do this.

3. Given the Expo, will it be possible to get an L visa and convert it to an F visa, while in China?

Thanks!

Re: Short term teaching - L or F visa?

You can try to apply for a longer duration of each stay visa in the US. It is much easier for US citizens to get longer duration visas, compared with citizens from other countries.
Since your main purpose is to travel, a tourist visa can work.
A 90-day duration or 60-day duration one is satisfying.

For US citizens, the prices are the same, whatever it is a 1-month, 3-month, 6-month or 1-year visa. Thus try to avoid extending L visas in China mainland. In Beijing, to extend an L visa, you need to open a Chinese bank account and deposit 3000 USD (or an equivalent in other currencies). It will be quite inconvenient for you.
If you want to stay more than 6 months in China, you can consider to convert L visa to longer F visa.

Hi,

1. It is easy to get tourist visa . you can call travel agency in your country , they can help you arrange for it .
2. change turist visa to business visa , that is no problem ,but the visa fee is expensive .
3. The China Visa Agency can help you arrange business invitation letter , you can hold business visa .

Re: Short term teaching - L or F visa?

I heard that as the Shanghai expo approaches, it will be more difficult to convert and L visa to F visa. This happened as the Olympics approached.

Can you tell me if this is true?

Thanks!

need help as well

ok thanks for all the info. here is my deal. perhaps someone can can give a clear, "non-Dr Seus" answer. I am an american first off....I know, I know. I have an "L" Visa that was issued on 02/19/2010. I have a 90day(3 Mo.)duration stay. which, if my math serves me, means that I need to get it renewed or make a visa run before 05/19/2010. Furthermore, I am an english teacher. but not the kind that is under contract. so the luxury of having my employer aid me is kinda out. So this is what I need at the very least. I need another 3 months or more here in china, as I am still figuring oiut whether or not im going to stay here, or what I will end up making as a career over here. Obviously I would like the most inexpensive route, as I am currently oliver twist kind of poor! thank you for your help.

Re: need help as well

If you are holding L visa now, and not sure about whether you can find a suitable job here in China, you can extend it for 3 months before meeting the deadline of 90 days duration stay.
leaving enough room to prepare for future career, luckily enough then, you will probably have work visa if you find a formal company to work with.

For the price, I have sent you PM, pelease check it

Re: Short term teaching - L or F visa?

Hi silas,

For ur situation now, here is two suggestions:

First, extend L to 3months; after 3months, if u wanna stay longer, u can change it to F visa or Z if u find a job;

Second, change L to F 6months directly as price of L-F conversion went down this morning, so u will have enough time to stay in China n if u wanna stay longer, either go on extending F or change it to Z;

For mroe information, feel free to contact me.

Best,

Phyllis

Hi,Silas

Welcome to China . When did you come to China last time ( last entry )?
About 90day(3 Mo.)duration stay . The PSB count days from entry China date. not from date of issue . For example , if you come to entry China date is 2010.Feb 20 . your visa expiry date is 2010.May 21 .

Solution 1 :You can be extended your tourist visa for one month or three months .
Solution 2 :Change tourist ( L ) visa to business ( F ) visa for 6 months.
Solution 3:If you find new job , your company can help you do working visa . good luck .

Re: Short term teaching - L or F visa?

The circumstance is changed recently, at least, the visa policy is altered after the Shanghai EXPO. But still not easy for someone, who don't have local company support, to get a F visa.
