Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in America/Australia/Canada?
Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in America/Australia/Canada?
America -> Chinese exclusion act prevented Chinese in America from naturalising and marrying Caucasians. Later, there was a quota of only 105 chinese immigrants per year till 1965 when that was abolished.
Canada -> Chinese Immigration Act again prevented Chinese from immigrating to Canada. Only in 1965 did Chinese began to go to Canada.
AUstralia -> Chinese exclusion act till 1973.
Why were these countries so racist against the Chinese?
I am learning about history of western culture, help me understand.

If you were truthful, you wouldn't say you're studying a history of Western culture. If you read an authentic History, you would be given more than a list of dates and events. Explanations surrounding the events would be given or at least, postulated. Then again, if you're a product of the China education system, you're already programmed and won't understand...

Re: Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in ...
I seem to remember a radical innovation by the Chinese government about 3 years ago... allowing foreigners to become permanent residents for the first time (a Chinese green card). I remember it got H-U-G-E articles in the China Daily News. It was never allowed before.
I wonder how hard it is for foreigners to to become an actual Chinese citizen...? I'm betting hell will freeze over first or you have a better chance of being hit by lightening.
Besides CN88, the China/Australia/Canada restrictions on Chinese based on race are over. However, we still have restrictions on the mentally unfit.

Re: Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in ...
i suppose one reason they had to put quotas on immigrants is that conditions in your country were so bad that all 1.5 billion people living here would try to escape.
does that answer your question?
also, china does not allow dual citizenship. many other countries do.
longshao, i am enjoying watching you hang yourself. i really am.

Re: Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in ...
I would guess it was because there was a general distrust of anyone not of Christian European descent.
I think you would also find there was similar legislation against many ethnic and racial groups, not just Chinese.
But the previous posters had a good point, and in answering their questions you may well find the answer will apply equally to your own.
How many non-Chinese immigrants are there in China with full citizenship?
Less than 20 I have heard.

Re: Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in ...
longshao, you're an ignorant idiot.
you criticize things about the west that your own country has issues with. china is one of the least welcoming countries in the world. even if you marry a local, you're an outsider having to apply for visas every year. you need to apply for permission to stay with your wife.
so think before you speak. or just shut the f*** up.

One more then Longshao-
Before the latest round of immigration from mainland China, the Chinese community in NZ were highly respected for their intelligence, work ethic, and law abiding behaviour.
The biggest shock for me when arriving in China was finding such a huge number of stupid, lazy people who didn't even understand the concept of rule by law.

Where is LS? Is he still trying to figure out all the information you guys have given as above?
I think sometimes the Americans do the same thing e.g. critisize China about Human rights while America is not that so perfect. I have no problem about this little kid critisizing the West but he is constantly waving his damn red flag which really annoys me...
Speaking of racism, sh*t, is there any places worse than the Chinese or Asian people, May I say?
Look at the Chinese recruitment adz, some even state like
"we don't want country people" or "have to be over 1.6 meters tall, no short ass please"... Can we put adz like that in the US, OZ, NZ without getting sued???

Re: Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in ...
This is so true...Asians who have been living in NZ for generations fit into our society quite well...actually I see no difference and they are hard working people too
Only the recent ones (after 2000
) especially oversea students have caused a few problems...they don't even try to fit in and always socialze within their own little group...some are sneaky and try to cheat...some are rude, crude and totally unattractive (yep, since they have come over, Aussies are off the top list
)
Oh, God! God! don't forget those Chinese govt delegation travellers!! I wish they ALL DIE from smoking...Hell, their govt officials are already so ill-mannered, let alone ordinary Chinese people!

I see the refusal of dual citizenship to be one more manifestation of CCP paranoia...
Is there any country on earth where anyone would contemplate even for a second exchanging their citizenship for Chinese citizenship? Maybe North Korea would have a few, but of course they're not allowed.

Chinese fear Yao Ming's child could be American
The fact that they "fear" it nicely epitomizes why China has a long way to go before it can join the ranks of respected world leaders.

It isn't racism if it is against 'Chinese'.

Re: Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in ...
china is the easiest country in the world to get a visa really. you can buy an f visa and stay for years on end. or a multiple L or z visa rather easily. which other country has such easy visa requirements?
visa controls on spouses of citizens is universal. it is the same in the norway or south africa. you dont get citizenship or PR just by marrying someone.
in the US, they take 2-3 years just to issue you your spousal visa to go to the USA to live with your wife. then there are a million background checks. and they even visit your house to check that you are living together!
in china, you just go to the police station every year and renew your 1 year visa. all done within a day. fuss free and simple.
at the end of 5 years, you can apply for PR or take up chinese citizenship after 8 years.
there are MANY non chinese chinese citizens. most are in hong kong, they have a lot of non chinese who have right of abode and chinese citizenship there.
in the mainland there are fewer. mostly because they dont want to take up chinese citizenship and not because the chinese govt refuses to admit them.
many want to obtain chinese citizenship. phillipinos, vietnamese, thais, cambodians, africans, armenians, etc.
many armenians, vietnamese, cambodians marry a chinese men just to live in china.
and the entire world (ppl like you) wants to live and work in china currently because it is an attractive and vibrant place.
yes why were there such laws targetting the chinese? chinese cannot enter these countries and cannot get citizenship or PR. why?
the arabs/europeans/indians were not targetted, only the chinese.
racist, ignorant and plain disgusting.
and it took till 1970s for australia to remove it? and 1965 for USA and CAN ?

Re: Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in ...
Longshao, I don't know where you are getting your information from regarding non-Chinese getting citizenship, but it is not accurate.
I have lived here for 15 years, have a Chinese wife, and all that is open to me is permanent residence. However the process is so complicated that I have never pursued it.
This is the best that is on offer, and certainly does not equate to citizenship.
Are you seriously going to point to the "foreigners" with citizenship in HK as proof of China's open policy? Even for you that's pushing it.
It is essentially impossible for a someone to become "Chinese" by nationality regardless of any situation.
The tiny few that do hold that privilege are friends of the Party that walked the long march, fought the Japanese, and stuck with China ever since.

you haven't even started the process and you said it was impossible. how does that work?
there are so many non chinese chinese citizens, especially in hong kong. and they are all approved by the central beijing govt.
are you willing to renounce your original citizenship first? if you are , it can be done since you have been in china for 15years.
you are not willing, hence, you have not started any application, hence all your bs about it being impossible.
you are really ignorant. find me someone (no matter what skin colour he is) who has been refused chinese citizenship by the govt when he has fufiled all the requirements stated in the constituition.

It works because that's what our civil affairs manager at my work told me-a man who works closely with the relevant govt departments and who is well connected.
He said don't bother because you will almost certainly not get it.
There are laws regulating the awarding of permanent residence and citizenship, but in the final analysis these are all awarded on a case by case basis at the discretion of the relevant government department.
How many non-Chinese do you know with Chinese nationality? And please don't use the HK argument again, that's entirely different as you well know.

Re: Why was there so much racism against the Chinese in ...
America probably placed a ban on Chinese in the 19th century because of the massive population in China and huge numbers of people who would travel to America for work if they didn't. If they hadn't, then today, who knows it could be Chinerica.
Also China, Japan and Tibet all used to have totally closed doors policies.
Your (longshao) idea that it is easy to get a visa in China is somewhat correct but with a few caveats - it is a grey legal area which could and has been (Olympics, October 1st celebrations) shut down during sensitive times, forcing anyone on said visa to leave China.
The visa rules for other countries may be stricter and take longer to get but once you have them it is a legal document.
Also your idea that America or any other place is more racist than China is laughable. Both countries have their racists. As you well know foreigners are likened to monkeys in China and uncivilised, long nosed barbarians and regularly shouted at (hellooooo) and stared at in the street (you might like to know that some people in the west think of Chinese as being like monkeys because they're small, brown and bandy legged....how ironic)
So, I think your painting of China being a paradise for foreigners is pushing it just a tad. It may have been during the Tang dynasty, but that is just one small period in China's history.
