Best L-Visa terms for US Passport holder?

I've been reading through the posts here and looking at the US Chinese Embassy website http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/hzqz/zgqz/t84246.htm, and it seems some people coming from US have been able to bypass 30day stay limit and get a 60, or even 90day stay on a multiple entry L-visa.

I was wondering if there is any special way or circumstance under which this is done? Or do I just have to ask Officer very nicely? Wink

I'm currently in US, planing on staying in Beijing for a little over 6mnths, and would like to leave soon, so i don't think i have time to get F-Visa done through agents.
If I were able to get multiple-entry 6month visa, with 90day stays, it would mean i only have to make a Mongolia/HK run once or twice (every 3months) for the duration of my time in Beijing, correct? and so would be cheaper than doing L->F conversion through some agents.

Is this possible? Am i understanding the wording correctly or severely misunderstood? Let me know. Thanks =)

Re: Best L-Visa terms for US Passport holder?

That's about right. From what I've heard it really depends on the officer who issues your visa. You can ask for more on your application but don't expect more than 30 days.

But if you get it, then awesome, if not then converting to an F once you get to Beijing is about as convenient as it gets (if not a financial hassle).

Re: Best L-Visa terms for US Passport holder?

Hi there,

Actually, you do not need to get a F visa when you come to China. First, the application is more bother than L visa. Second, it's so easy to stay in China for a long time though you take a L visa.

It's a good idea that you apply for a 60-day or 90-day L visa directly, but it's difficult to get it. You must obtained such the visa before, and provide the copy one to Embassy. If it's your first time to come to China, get a long time visa is impossible.

So I suggest you to get a L visa when you come, then convert it to 6 months F visa in China. The price is not very expensive, and I think it's more convenient for you.

If you need help about your visa, please contact me. I can help you!

Re: Best L-Visa terms for US Passport holder?

Hi there,

I was reading ur post n reply here, I was wondering why dont u get a F visa even its 30days for each stay n when ur in China, just extend it to 6months which is much cheaper than u do L-F.

Normally u will need a F invitation letter to apply 30days F visa, if u need my help, i can help u apply for one in Bj commercial bureau n send to u which only costs several hundread rmb, quite cheap.

If you need my help or more info. feel free to contact me.

Best,

Phyllis

Your understanding is correct. The best possible deal for you is to get, while you are in the USA, a 12-month multientry L tourist visa, with 90 days duration of stay. These are fairly routinely given out, even to people without previous visas in their passport. The fee you pay is the same regardless of # entries or duration of stay, so you might as well go for it. Go for the 12 month not the 6 month, and you'll be more likely to get 90 days over 60 days duration. You need nothing more than the completed application form, fee, photo, passport. I strongly recommend you do this through a US-based agent though and not by yourself, even if there's a consulate just up the street from you. Your chances of getting what you ask for will improve. Remember that you cannot mail anything directly to Embassy or Consulates. I use www.mychinavisa.com and go through their Houston office (which is buddy-buddy with the legendarily cooperative Chinese Consulate in Houston). I'll be using them again in about 3 weeks when I go back to the US from China for a month. They have downloadable form from their website. When you look at the form, you'll see the choice of boxes to click for duration of the entire visa, also a place to write in your longest stay in which you should put 90.

With the May Chinese holiday intervening--which the Chinese missions there will observe--if you send out your stuff ASAP, you might have your passport/visa back end of next week (use FedEx for to/from agent). With this visa in hand, a border run or two is not a big deal, and you can safely avoid further need to deal with the PSB or local agents here, unless you want/need to completely change your visa. Remember that local agents here have no clue about visa issuance to US citizens in the USA, and they want to sell you expensive services once you get here...so don't expect impartial advice from most of them.

Re: Best L-Visa terms for US Passport holder?

Hi,
If it is ur first time to come to China, you can not get F visa with (60 days or even 90days stay). you can get one month L visa and then convert it to F visa when you plan to leave here or do intership. Since it is easier to do L to F conversion, but compared to F visa extension , it is still more expensive.
Talking about F visa, you can get it with invitation letter, which is issued by Bureau of Commerce. and have it extended for 6 months after your arrival.

For a US citizen applying in the USA, this is an absolute lie. And you don't need an F visa, just get the L and you won't need the invitation letter (which by the way, for US citizens applying in the USA for the F, doesn't need to come from the Bureau of Commerce--it can come from any Chinese business or even your home country company).

It's amazing...the crap local Chinese agents put out without having a clue what they are talking about.

Re: Best L-Visa terms for US Passport holder?

Just a quick update..

In the end, I was able to get a Double-Entry 90day L-visa. Although this works ok for me, I had applied for a 1yr multiple entry and so am a bit disappointed they didn't just give me it in case i wanted to stay a little longer than the 6mnths.

@Bigsisjiejie: Thank you especially for your advice. Unfortunately, i didn't see it before i went to apply. And there is indeed a consulate (NY) literally just up the street from me, so i went in to submit the visa myself. Now kinda wishing i had tried it through a US based agent... next time.

Anyway, happy i finally have the visa in hand and am on my way to China for the first time!

(oh, and a few of the agents on this site really need to lower your ridiculous prices. How can you advertise costs that are 1,000+rmb or more than your competitors???)
