Hepatitis B carriers and work visas

My partner and I are looking to work in China, but he is a hepatitis B carrier, having been born with it. I know that historically, China has barred HBV carriers from getting work visas, but I also read that they're no longer requiring an HBV test for employment or school, at least not for PRC citizens, and now they're even lifting the ban on travelers with HIV. So what is the situation now? Will he still be unable to get a work visa?

No, they are not lifting the ban on expats with HIV. They are "reconsidering" the ban, but the predominate view is that in the end they will not lift the ban.

The only way to tell if HBV carriers can pass it by trying. You might want to go to the medical facility where they conduct the medical examinations and ask if they test for HBV. If they still test for it, odds are they will use positive results against you.

Re: Hepatitis B carriers and work visas

Hi there,

Actually, China is no longer discriminate against hepatitis B virus carriers now. Normally, we are no longer need to an HBV test for employment or school, though for foreigners. So just a hepatitis B carrier want to work in China, they are allowd to get a work visa.

But China still has not lifted the ban with HIV. And I believe the future will not lift this restriction either.

You and your partner can try to apply for the work visa in China. I think it's no problem. If you still have some questions or need any help about the visa, please contact me. I can help you!

Good luck!!
