mushroom shaped things on the street - sometimes emitting steam

What the hell are they? In 5 years I hadn't noticed them, then I had a visitor last week pointed them out, now I see them everywhere. Some are green, some are red. About the height of a person, mushroom pattern and shape, sometimes they have steam coming out.
I must know, what and why?

You see giant mushrooms emitting steam? Sometimes I see giant turds walking around, cursing people. Other times, winged lizards. Giant ones. Mostly, though, "I see dead people." What should I do?

try imagining a structure, about the size of a person, that is shaped and painted like a mushroom or toadstool. They are on the pavement (sidewalk) or next to the road. Sometimes they have steam coming out.

Ive seen them too, but never as tall as a person...I think they are some sort of ventilation for all the methane built up from "public toilets"

yup, i've seen them too. always wondered what they were and why they chose mushrooms when a simple grate would have done the trick. they look very eerie on a cold winter's night. fairy tale sentinels of ventilation.

wtf are you all talking about? I've been here 2 years and can't recall anything remotely like what youre describing.
Guess I'll be on the lookout for mushrooms from now on, just like when I went on country walks as a youngster

I saw them too and apart from being drunk I am never on drugs. They are weird, tall and ... steamy! Nothing you would like to close to I imagine but I only saw them in the south east of Beijing near BAIZIWANLU. I am sure I have a picture somewhere ...

I don't think so. I have seen them far from any subway lines. But I gave up trying to figure out what they are a long time ago.

I think they are drain waste vents, I always thought it was kinda cool that they were mushrooms.
They maintain a neutral air pressure in the sewage system and prevent gasses from building up and being released back into buildings.
