Renew Passport with resident permit?

Has anyone needed to renew their passport while in China with a resident's permit?
If yes,
How to deal with the permit? Do you get your old passport back at your embassy or do you need to go to the chinese authorities for them to issue some temporary resident's permit?
Any help would be appreciated since the portuguese embassy is always too busy to answer my questions and I don't feel like spending a whole morning there just to be told i need to go somewhere else first!

you should go to your embassy to renew your passport,after you get a new one,just update the resident permit (police station)
ps:you would better keep the old passport in case of an emergemcy.

Normally, the embassy will punch the hole on the passport or cut the edge to make the old passport void.
After you get the new passport, you have to do the following in turn within 10 days, by taking the two passports and other necessary documents.
1. change the passport number on your Alien Employment Permit.
2. transfer the residence permit to the new passport.
You'd better apply for the new passport soon. I know some embassies in China are not effient. It takes longer time than expected to get new passports.
In case your residence permit expires when you are waiting for the new passport, there will be some trouble.

And, I imagine after these steps are completed you must then go to your local PSB to update their records with the new residence permit?

The step 1 takes place at the Foreign Affairs Bureau (if employed as a foreign expert) or at the Labor Bureau (if employed as an Alien employee by a company).
The step 2 takes place at the Public Security Bureau.
After the 2 steps, you have to go to the local police station to re-register as you get a new visa transferred on your new passport (Each time you get a new visa or move to a new apartment, you have to do the registration again).
