What is the process of extending a working visa / residence permit?

Hi,
My friend is working for a small company and she has a working permit that is about to expire. What does she need to do to extend that working permit? The company is small so they don't know the process, but they will give her whatever documents she needs.
Some basic questions:
1) What are the steps to extend the working visa / residence permit?
2) About how long will it take? How soon before her visa expires should she apply?
3) About how much will it cost? (without an agent)

1.you need to go to the labor bureau to extend her work permit(of course with a lot of papers)
2.then go to the psb to get a new visa ,the government fee is 400.
besides,if your friend's company is very small.i have no idea whether it has the qualification to apply for it.

Step One: Change work permit from the last company to new company
Documents:
1. The application Form
2. Written application report provided by the new company
3. Release letter by last company
4. Employment contract with the new company
5. Copy of approval certificate—if it is a foreign invented company
Copy of social insurance registration—if it is a domestical company
6. Copy of duplicated business license
7. BA or higher than BA degree certificate (Original page, copy and its Chinese translation page with its translation company’s seal on it)
8 (At least) two-year overseas working experience proof (Original page, copy and its Chinese translation page with its translation company’s seal on it)
Or more than two years working visa pages in your passport

11. Work permit (origninal)
Step Two: Z visa extension for one year and multiple entry
Documents:
1.Temporary residence permit
2.Application form
3.Medical certificate
4.Work permit
5.Business license of the new company
6.Passport and visa\
7.Four pieces of two-inch photos with white or light blue background
