No need to join a tour group. Just get some friends together and rent a car for a day. Plenty of drivers in the classifieds here.

Planning it for yourself means you won't have to go to some souvenir shop and you can plan to take as much time on the wall as you want.

I just went on a multiday great wall hike from Old Dragon's Head in Hebei to Simatai. lots of fun, and the guides were great. I think it would be a good hike for someone new to Beijing. Check it out if you'd like: www.greatwalladventure.com

I would suggest the tour at the hostel on NGLX for a good one day hike. ( http://www.backpackingchina.com/ ) Its something like RMB260 and its simply a bus ride out to Jinshanling, the tickets (1 for JSL, 1 for Simatai and 1 for a bridge you need to cross) and back--no stupid stops at tourist trap or anything. The hike is 8km and takes 4 hours. This the wild/unrestored part of the wall, so I thought it was quite beautiful. If you are 3-4 people, you probably could just hire a cab for RMB800 and do the same hike, just on your own.

The GreatWall hiking is pretty easy, even no need to rent a private car.

Take a long distance bus(heading for Miyun 密云) at Dongzhimen bus terminal, get off at Miyun town stop, get an illegal taxi (黑车）with 130--150rmb for a round trip. You need to bargain with the driver, and 130 is for each car, not person.

BTW, the section of Jiankou was already forbidden many years ago, don't suggest to climb anymore.
