Does anyone know which bank if any allows a man and wife to open a joint account? I have tried several and cannot seem to find one. Any information would help...thanks
Joint account in China means you put it in your wife's name.
We have a business that requires both signatures for transactions...its easy in Canada but its a long tedious process to go through here and many diffrent finacial manoeuvers we have to go though. If we had a joint account it would simplify matters a whole lot...oh well...life goes on...lol...thanks
I got one at Citibank buuuuuuuuut..... it's completely useless for every day use.
You can't get a cash card for it so you have to open a separate single account. Then when you want to take money out you transfer cash from the joint account to your single account then you transfer money onto your cash card. From there you can use it at an ATM, but just for the amount you put on your card, not the whole amount in your account.

Simple, no?
I don't understand them, much, either. My wife and I just opened one at ICBC and we got two cards with the account but the numbers are different. Also - they can't be used at ATMs or like a debit card at the grocery store or whatever. Kind of ridiculous.

That's Chinese banking for you.

I finally found what I wanted at Standard Chartered Bank. Everything from withdrawing money to US money being deposited from a major business. My wife and I can both take money out....but there is only one card...which is ok...I can also take out money from Canada or the US directly but it must be...get this OVER 2,000 RMB. There is NO charge for this type of withdrawal either. No arguement from me.....there is a charge though for withdrawals UNDER 2,000 RMB. I thought he had it backwards but ...nope...thats what it was.....works for us... Finally found what I was needing.
Oh yes....forgot to tell you...there are 3 types of service
1,) Basic services for under 100,000.
2.) VIP service for over 100,000.
3.) a generalized service with small benefits for those in between 50,000 and 100,000 that havent reached VIP status yet.
You cannot receive some of the transfers and withdrawing fo free unlsess you have the VIP status...it seems they make all their service fees off the ordinary Joe who doesnt have that much in their account.

Can do that with just about any bank except for the free withdrawls.

I don't know ... some might say they make all their money off suckers who keep 100k in an account tied up earning next to zero interest.
There is no free lunch.

I agree but in my case I have money tied in for one year collecting 2.8 % interst....I have an extra bit available for quick withdrawals if I need but not close to 50 K. I know there are other things to invest in but I dont quite feel safe with what I want to invest in yet...I will wait for a year.
Up till this year you couldnt get a "joint account" ...at least one that would let me do all the things we need to do with our travel etc etc....this one works for us.

ICBC has joint accounts.
Standard Chartered is ok, but if you ever have to go to a branch good luck finding one. Or one of their ATMs.

This is good info, not much use to me but good to know.
BTW, we've been making 3.6 - 5.1% interest for the past year on some investment-products offered by the local banks (in Chinese they are simply called "funds"). The low-risk kind that they won't guarantee in writing, but will tell you that there's close to no chance of you not receiving the posted returns.

Those financial products are actually pretty good and, as you stated, low risk. There are even some that guarantee no loss of principal.
Straight mutual funds, on the other hand, are pretty crappy these days.

If you're still looking, HSBC offers a good husband/wife option. Quite simple to enroll. Never a problem on a typical day. Solid customer service. In English.
Interesting that getting a joint account in China is so rare. I wonder if China has the rewards programs for using a debit card, where you can earn points then redeem points for cash or merchandise. When using a joint debit card together, its important to keep track of your balance so you don't bounce checks - be accountable to each other.

mmmm...not sure but in this bank if you have a minimum balance of $100,000 you get most all your transactions free of charge. If I am in the US a simple phone call and they will send me any amount no charge as long as I maintain the 100 grand minimum balance.

I don't think any bank in China has a debit rewards program.
It is strange that joint accounts never used to exist. I guess it stems from how the husband turns over all his pay each month to the wife and she handles everything.

You are right on the joint accounts never used to exist. I had a reall difficult time finding a joint account over the last few years. Especially one that met our specifications to withdraw from out of country etc etc. It's still a bit of a pain but the one we have now is better than what all the other joint accounts that we researched would let you do.

Having only one ATM cards kind of defeats the purpose of a joint account, no?
ICBC has a joint account with 2 ATM cards. Both can be used to withdraw cash from any UnionPay ATM in China or abroad.
