Can I rent a flat on an L visa?
Dear Beijingers
Can you help me find out what I need for renting a flat in Beijing (been to China a few times involved a number of different visas and, I think, different procedures
)
Question is this:
Can I rent a flat on a L visa, or do I need an F visa?
What's the thing-a-ma-gick with the residence permit again:
You go to the 派出所 (police) and they give you a 暂住证 (temp. res. - the papernote) but how do you go from this one to the 居留许可 (res. permit for foreigners - the one in your passport) again? and do I need a 居留许可 to rent a flat or just a 暂住证?
Thanks in advance

Technically, you CAN, but it gets a bit complicated, because when you register at the police station, you will need to show who owns the place (or rents the place if you are visiting friends) that you are staying at.
The normal process is get a visa in your passport, and if it's an L visa, that's it. You only need to get other bits and bobs done if you are on a different kind of visa.
How long do you intended to stay here?

Re: Can I rent a flat on an L visa?
Hi there,
暂住证 (temp. res) is for all foreigners live in Bj, no matter what visa u hold, you will have to register in local police;
居留许可 (res. permit) is like a visa, normal foreigners who apply for working visa or student visa will get res. permit visa page on your passport, they will write clearly there if your working就业、任职 or study 学习. so if you are holding other type of visa like L tourist visa or F business visa, you wont have res. permit but your L/F visa page.

What the above said, you apply for a 居留许可 as part of your work visa procedures. 暂住证 is obtained from the paichusuo irrespective of whatever visa you hold (L,F,X,Z).
Landlords don't usually care what visa you are on to rent out a flat to you. In fact I had signed a rental contract and got the 暂住证 before while on an L visa.

Thanks for the replies, sounds cool!
I'm intending to stay for approx. 5 months, and I think the easiest thing to do is to try to get a double entry 6 mth L-visa then.

Yes, if you will leave China mianland during the 5months, then get L visa with double entries is okay.
Or if you dont wanna leave China mainland during the 5months stay, you'd better aplly for a F visa n get it extended for 6months without limitation on each stay.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any question.
