Air Pollution Info for Beijing Municipality

So I thought I would get myself revved up Party for my move to Beijing by reading all the pollution/air purifier/face mask threads.

I have a question, though. While my original plan was to live in Beijing, I may instead be living out in Pinggu 平谷, a district on the east of Beijing municipality. Does anyone know what the air is like there?

I've checked the China Pollution Map and China's Environmental Protection Ministry's website, but there was no information on Pinggu. I figured I'd just cross my fingers, but today I came across some pictures on flickr and those were definitely not the blue skies I was hoping for. I did a bit more digging and found this, which scares the crap out of me. ... But I'd like to remain hopeful and look for more information sources first.

So... If anyone has any maps or information on air quality for Beijing the municipality, Pinggu district in particular, that would be appreciated ... and even more appreciated if it demonstrates that Pinggu is not as bad as that AMFIC map makes it to be.

Re: Air Pollution Info for Beijing Municipality

it will be marginally better in some suburbs, but not remarkably different (unless you happen to be in the mountains).

why in god's name would you ever consider living in pinggu? it's nowheresville

Re: Air Pollution Info for Beijing Municipality

Looking at pictures on flickr, it seemed like Pinggu is in a bit of a valley.. you know, where a lot of the fun stuff likes to settle down -- bad weather, bad air.. Not entirely sure if it's in a valley, though, just looked like it. Suburbs not much better..? Should I arm myself as if I were planning to live in Beijing anyway? Does this mean that I shouldn't go running?

I taught some Air China commercial aviation trainees and I'll be headed to Pinggu to live with the family of one of my students. I figure it'll be a fun course in Chinese, although with the Pinggu dialect I'll start getting my 汤 and 糖 mixed up. Small cities in China are still fairly big to me. I'm a city girl that managed to relegate myself to North Dakota for five years, so I don't think I'll suffer too much. I can always run off to Beijing when I want. ... If I'm being overly optimistic, you should tell me. hehe.

Re: Air Pollution Info for Beijing Municipality

there may be some differences and maybe marginally better some days but the air will still be awful. Running outside will be possible sometimes but downright damaging the rest.

Re: Air Pollution Info for Beijing Municipality

Air pollution in Beijing is a problem. Figures for particulate matter (PM10) - tiny airborne particles caused by the burning of fossil fuels like petrol in motor vehicles - are regularly several times higher than the WHO air quality guideline level of 50 micrograms/cubic metre.

Re: Air Pollution Info for Beijing Municipality

OK one thing I didn't realize until I got here is that pollution is NOT just in big cities.... it's everywhere. All over. The Great Smog of China. Plan on it.

I wish they would get as angry at Beijing's pollution as they do at Norway! These past 5 days have been terrible BUT "Be magnificent wiht us!"
