residence permit renewal

Hi,
I am a teacher in Hunan, China and my residence permit ends on July 29th of this year. I will be going back home to America for 2 months before coming back to teach in Hunan again for another 10 months. Is it possible for me to just renew my residence permit for another year after I have returned to China?
My employer is telling me I need to do it before I leave for America, costing me double because it is more than 365 days, but everything I have read implies that I have 30 days to get the residence permit after I enter China again to work.
I just don't want to be paying 800 yuan for a residence permit that I will not be using for 2 months. I would much rather pay the normal 400 yuan amount for a residence permit that I will use.
Any information would be appreciated.

Since your res. permit will expire while you're overseas, then you will need to apply for a NEW Z-visa and go through all the processes to get a residence permit again.

HI there,
You'd better renew your Z b4 you go back America as its earsier to just renew it rather than when ur back Hunan apply for everything from the beginning.

ok, so getting the new residence permit acts as getting a new Z visa basically?
So if I get this residence permit, then I won't have to go through the process of getting a new Z visa when I go back to America? I can just come back to China with my new residence permit and that's fine?
Sorry if these questions are a bit ignorant, I just want to make sure that I am doing everything right.

Hi,
You are right, if you extended your residence permit b4 you go back to America, you just need to come back with RP rather than applyin Z and do everything again from the beginning.
