Help! I overstay 1 day in China, where should I go?

I know that if I overstay 1 day, I am not fined, but i should go to the immigration office, where they record the reason of the overstay.
But?
Is this place situated in the Pudong airport and I can go through a normal check in procedure at the day of my departure and be detained in the airport OR I should go somewhere beforehand?
What if I have an overstay and come to the departure, can they not let me leave China or something?

Two years ago my flight was 1 day after my visa expired and it was not a problem. Somebody had told me that there was a 24hr grace period.
