There's an OTC drug that Bayer puts out called Talcid. The Chinese name is 达喜(da2 xi3). If the pharmacist you go to still doesn't know what it is, you can try its other name 铝碳酸镁片(lv3 tan4 suan1 mei2 pian4).

Peptobismol (ie bismuth subsalicylate) isn't available in China, which is too bad because it works well for stomach problems (heartburn, ulcers, h pylori). Talcid is a different medicine, it's an antacid which may work as well but is a different chemical. China has capsules of bismuth subcitrate, which may work as well as Peptobismol since it's the same bismuth. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be OTC; we just started selling it at our expat clinic pharmacy here at IMC in Beijing. It's called juyuansuanbijia jiaonang 拘橼酸铋钾胶囊.
