I depend on the internet not only for personal use but as a resource for every day business needs. I was wanting to learn about general reliability, speed, and how the overall experience would differ there compared to living at home in Silicon Valley.
Might be worth noting that you posted at 2.am Beijing time. Everyone's either sleeping, partying or performing satanic ceremonies involving rodents, candles and long cardboard tubes.
although i don't know what relevance that has with posts about the internet being removed.
here in california we prefer glass tubes. . .
Wow...where and when was the internet removed? I better get more sleep...
Anyway, the answers to your questions depends on (1) what you pay for (as anywhere else); (2) your community location (infrastructure can vary greatly), and (3) precisely what you want to access via the internet. I'm sure you've heard of the 'Great Firewall" but there are ways to get around it (so I hear), at least in part.

Harmless no?
Yes, absolutely harmless.
The internet can be quite slow here, and many sites are blocked. You get around that easily with a proxy, but that slows it down even more. It's fairly reliable.
From what I here porn wouldn't be needed all that much with all the single pretty girls there, or is that just all hype?
Hey thanx for the input everyone!
I guess there's always some adjustments you need to make where ever you go. And in this case it looks like dial-up speeds are where it start's (but probably by no means end)
Is there much live music in Beijing? I guess you can count out seeing any international touring bands and big shows. . .
If you are single you shouldn't have any problems at all as long as you don't have too many debts to service back home. Check out the apartment listings in the classifieds section for the type of place you want to give you an idea to start with. It would be better if you tell us what type of lifestyle you want to lead.
So where would you say is the hippest place to be in Beijing and why.
This should be interesting.
As far as a 'lifestyle' goes - I'm open, but your typical rock n roll lifestyle would be cool. Hahaha. . .
It seems like getting around kinda' sucks there like any big city, so I would think I would want to keep close. But maybe not. Here in the San Francisco area we are spoiled with lots of parks and trees and places to escape the chaos which I definitely take advantage of on a regular (meaning every other day on average) basis.
Peace of mind and connecting with nature is a priority in my life for sure. . .
You guys rock - thank you again for all your help and advice!
The parks in Haidian are beautiful and I found it interesting that they referenced it being a sister city of Cambridge, MA, I grew up in the North East.
US$50K a year is about RMB25K a month. On that salary you could live quite comfortably. Your biggest outlays are housing. If you skimped on that a little and went with a more local kind of place (3-5 thousand kuai a month) then you wouldn't have a problem taking taxis everywhere, going out for food and drink, and shopping for gadgets, clothes, etc..

Actually getting around Beijing is pretty easy, the subway system is great and cheap and there are buses and taxi's everywhere! Sure there is traffic problems at certain times of the day but getting around is easy.
As for parks Beijing is loaded with parks, they are everywhere, big, medium and small. Normaly there is one within walking distance from where you live and with your high salary your compound might have a nice park like setting right where you live.
Either stay close to where you work or be near the subway.
In off peak times, cheap cabs, great. In peak times, traffic is hell.
Like I said on your other link, let people know where you are going to work. Odds are, there is a nice place near there for you to live.
Have you ever been to China? Wow, moving there sight unseen. It is not just the cultural change (which is interesting), it is also the air, the dust or sand in the air, the rip offs, the climate, the oh so many things. Better if you see it first, but you already have the offer, so no time for that.

You sound softer than a Westin mattress.
Most people move here without having any idea what it will be like. A visit never gives you the real picture anyway. You'll be fine Lars. Living in Beijing is hardly even an adventure these days with KFC, Starbucks, ATM machines, movies, shopping malls.... Now in my day....

Yes, not tough at all to live in Beijing these days, very modern. If you can not speak any Chinese that would kind of suck but then again I have seen many who do ok here and do not speak any Chinese at all.
One thing that shows someone has been in China a while is having a list of non functioning proxies as long as their arm. As soon as someone mentions they found a great proxy on a board, it is blocked a short while afterwards.
One of the best options to avoid all that is to buy a tunnel from a company online, they are quite cheap and a little more secure.
Having just left Beijing after living and working there I have to say I am so relieved, apart from the fact that its dirty, polluted, overpopulated basically unhealthy, I found dealing with anyone in business or financial bad, I would not trust the Chinese in Beijing who are employers or selling products or services, Liars and cheats, They cheat their own staff as employers shockingly dont pay their wages many times.Time will come when the Chinese people will say enough is enough the CP of PRC will have to change faster than this or else an uprising will eventually come. It seems they rely only economic growth to preserve their one party rule, It wont be enough in the long term Mr Jintao.
Hi Lars, it's your girlfriend again... apparently you forgot you had one when you posted this second inquiry about all the single pretty girls in China. Glad to hear you wouldn't have needed porn since you were actually planning on cheating on me instead... I don't even know who you are anymore... or have I ever known who you really were?

Is there any metal bands in Beijing? That would be interesting.
How would living on 50K a year be there?
Could you live in a pretty nice place downtown and go out a lot?

Sweet! Thank you so much chaofan!
I started another thread here and was asking about the coolest ares to live in BJ and it seemed like no one could tell me.
What would you say?
Herbie shared a link to the Haiden District and it looked awesome.
I've lived in Hollywood/LA, Orange County, Philadelphia, Oakland and San Francisco, so believe me traffic and public transit doesn't scare me much.
Thanx again for your input!
