BEIJING (AFP) – China's air pollution increased this year for the first time since 2005, the environmental protection ministry has said, due to sandstorms, a rise in construction and industrial projects, and more cars.
The level of inhalable particles, a major air pollution index, was also up during that time in those cities for the first time since 2005, Tao said, blaming the deterioration in air quality on severe spring sandstorms.
"More construction and industrial projects that started this year due to economic recovery and the rapid increase in automobiles should also be blamed," Chai Fahe, vice head of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, told the China Daily newspaper.
Acid rain was also a problem in the first half of the year -- out of 443 cities the ministry monitored, 189 suffered from the harmful precipitation.
A report published in March by the London-based medical journal The Lancet said air pollution in the Asian nation was widely to blame for 1.3 million premature deaths a year from respiratory disease.

Seems I was sick this year alot more than last year, I will be in sunny warm clean air Oregon in less than a week, my lungs will not know what to do with all that clean air!

blucat, if you are unhappy with what has been revealed to the press, you can always approach the officials named in the article, viz. Messrs Tao Detian, spokesman for the Ministry of Environmental Protection (http://www.mep.gov.cn) and Chai Fahe, Vice Head of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (http://www.craes.cn/cn/english/welcome.html ) to tell them to stop dishing bad news. But I believe that they had obtained clearance from the highest authority, the Politburo, before speaking to the media.

This level of environment awareness today reminds me of time when people used to live in caves, shitting in one corner and eating in another one... but they were plain stupid to build a toilet, sanitary etc These people today, are blatantly greedy and rude, making all of us to breathe sh*t while they are making net profit. It's not a country development when whole country gets sick nor f-ing sand storm, it's jst maybe a storm of corruption! There I include all damned Western industrialists, who weakened their own country economies running for 'low-cost' labor to Asia, making mess, playing with no rules, poisoning ground, air and water while putting bucks in Chinese politician's pockets. At the end, it's so f-ing obvious that US educational system is f-ing overrated , like Coca-Cola. Stinky and poisoning but fancy!!!
