Can you leave the city while waiting for a visa extension?

I'm backpacking around on a 30 day L visa and need an extra 3 days due to a flight change. On one hand, I've heard that you get a makeshift passport when you apply at the PSB for an extension, but on the other hand I've also heard that you have to stick to the address on your temporary residence permit.

Could anyone clarify whether going out of town for part of those 5 working days would be an issue? Or I guess if there's anywhere around Beijing or the northeast that's known for 1-3 day visa processing that would work too -- I'm using a Canadian passport and speak fluent Mandarin so there shouldn't be any issues with the application itself. Thanks!
