Decent second-hand furniture in Beijing?
Hi there,
I've been out in Gaobeidian a dozen times rummaging through the furniture shops but was wondering if there was anywhere someone could recommend good second-hand (not necessarily faux-antique) furniture to kit out a hutong home a bit closer to the city centre.
Honestly, if I have to pretend I know what I'm doing with another Ikea flat-pack, I might as well pack it all in myself.
Would love to hear of other people's lucky finds in the city (inside 3rd Ring Road).
Any interesting 1950s stuff?
Thanks in advance,
- F

Re: Decent second-hand furniture in Beijing?
hi there,
i am not sure what you mean by "decent", i m not experienced in this matters but i know that my landlord got my couch on Ladies' street... there is a market for home stuff like lamps and furniture etc. I am actually looking for a place for 2nd hand furniture too but i know Ladies' Street and what they have is he modern looking stuff which i dont want. I also know there are loads of furniture makers past sihui east, but i dont speak chinese so i wouldnt go there, but if you speak chinese u should go with pix of what you want, all taxis in the CBD should know the furniture area near sihui cuz it's huge.
What did you find in Gaobeidian? I might check it out. and how do u get there?
Hope this helps

Re: Decent second-hand furniture in Beijing?
Hi Y,
To get to Gaobeidian get subway line 1/Batong line to Gaobeidian station. Go out the south west exit and walk back to the junction and turn left (heading south) past a car showroom / garage. Follow the main road south for about ten minutes (if you cross the big railway line you've gone too far) and you should see a big Chinese gate on your left hand side - this road stretches for maybe 2km with shops either side. There's a pretty good mix of stuff but mostly leaning to the faux-antique side of things. But these guys will make just about anything.
Check it out!

You're talking about the place at Gao Bei Dian.
I used to know of a good second hand used furniture market near San Yuan Qiao but it's been several years since I was there. I'm looking for a desk though for my office and was thinking of heading there again. If it's still there and any good I'll post here about it.

Craiglist is a good choice as they allow people to easily search for secondhand furniture available within their cities. You can find cheap secondhand furniture for sale in a variety of places. Most commonly it is sold through local classified ads or at garage sales. There are also second hand furniture stores that sell only gently used furniture, but their prices will be a bit higher since they are selling the merchandise to make a profit, not just to get it out of the way.
