I'm thinking about hiking in Huang Shan mountains during the holidays 9/22-9/24. Are there any groups to join? Ideally it should be hiking by feet, no cable cars
I climbed enough "Shans" and vertical parks and nature reserves in my first couple of years here to last me the rest of my life.
If you're really into that sh*t take normal weekend off and go.
Chinese holidays are a time to hide inside your apartment, occasionally peering out the window from behind the curtain between every few hours of gaming/movie watching.
To be honest, being in Hefei for the past 8 years myself, I have heard of people mostly taking the cable cars up, so I believe the actual foot traffic on the mountains will not be high, as it doesn't include the total amount of people there. I was recently told that the restaurants on the mountain are forbidden to use the cable cars to bring up food and so on, so because of that, have to make the trek up the mountains by foot. If they can do, I am sure there is enough room for a few more people to hike up it.
Huang Shan is an absolute must see (the sunrise specifically) and I do recommend you go...just not during the National Day holidays. It'll be a madhouse for sure...but if you can handle the crowds then maybe you'll be fine.

Re: Huang Shan
Dude, that's one taxing walk up the stairs. Mid-autumn festival it's bound to be far too many Chinese people there. Wish you good luck.
