Is there a need to cancel work permit?

I left my company about a year ago and they did not cancel my work permit. Hence, I am holding my residence permit till now.
My work permit will expire on 14 Oct and my residence permit 15 oct. I am getting my dependent residence permit (my husband is working here) and now they are asking for the work permit cancellation documents.
Question: Is there a need to cancel the work permit since it is already expiring in another 14 days to come?

Hi,
Do you still have the origial work permit? if you have ,you can go to Labour Bureau by yourself to cancel it.
When your work permit cancelled, it means that you have no relationship with former company.and if you prepare to get dependant residence permit, you will have no work permit.

If you run into problems, such as needing a release letter from the old job and you can not get it, you can go to HK and get a 30 day L tourist visa which cancels everything that you did previously, and then apply for the RP right away as soon as you get back to BJ.
