Visa runs ! Hong-Kong - Mongolia - Korea ---- Extend L-visa
Hello,
I'm opening a conversation about the visa runs ! Please note that I'm not talking about doing a visa abroad but it's a discussion for people who are already holding a L-visa with multiple entry (or maybe other type of visa, I don't know)... You may be in that particular case where you need to do frequent visa run!
A visa run is thus a trip to leave China (and get an exit stamp) and enter directly after to obtain a new entry stamp. Depending of your visa, you can then have a L-visa valid again for a period of 60 or 90 days !
Is someone in that case here ? What about your experience ? Do someone hold a 2 year multi entry L-Visa ?
About the choices:
Hong-kong (NO VISA to enter)
- by train around 600rmb, 24h to go, 24h to come back. (departure at Beijing West train station check MTR website for more info)
- by plane, via Shenzen (3700rmb + a trip to the boarder) or direclty Hong-kong = 400 rmb.
Korea (No visa to enter !!)
- by plane, 1700 rmb
Mongolia (VISA)
- by bus to Erlian, it's the closest destination... and cheapest (around 350rmb all incl) see other post BUT it's not mentioned in most of the story about that visa run that you will need to apply for a visa (except for American, for once an American passport has an advantage!). So you have to add 495rmb for a visa run to Mongolia
So it seems that for now the best visa run is Seoul ! I Would be please to see your reactions and comments, own experience will be appreciated.
cheers

I just got back from this visa run by flying from Beijing to Erlian. I've written up a guide here for anyone that wants all the specific details. In short, fly one way for Y160-260, take a black cab back, all in one day (16 hours).

Hey lijia, that's a very excellent guide on doing the Erlian run in minimum time. Thanks! Question: for the return Erlian-Beijing beginning after lunchtime, are buses an option...with a later return time into BJ of course? I presume if the visa run day is scheduled with forethought, catching the train back is also an option with additional time required.

There are sleeper buses that run from Erlian to Beijing in the afternoon. You get to Beijing the next morning. Tickets go quickly. So buy as soon as you recross the border.

I can't remember how much they cost though.

What's the possibility of making a visa run by exiting from Dandong to North Korea and then coming right back? Anyone know?

so i have an emergency, my visa is about to expire, i know it is really irresponsible from me. i have a week left, but its spring festival, new years, offices are closed. so i was thinking to do the hk visa run. does this way of extending the visa work also if i don't have the "L visa"... i have "X visa"?
please someone respond...

The HK run in this thread isn't about the visa, or extending the visa at all. Some visas, such as the L tourist visa, have a 'Duration of stay'....which is how many consecutive days you can stay. For example, my roommate had a 1 Year L visa with only 30 days duration. He had to run to Mongolia once a month to reset it.
With all that being said, does your visa actually end, or is your duration of stay ending?
If your visa is ending, I would try calling Sinovisa and ask their advice. However it sounds like you might just have to go HK and get a cheap L visa.

Can you double check your visa type? Is it an X visa or a Residence permit for study?
X visa is valid for 30 days from the date of entry. After entry you need to have it converted to Residence Permit for Study.
Normally X visa is only 1 entry. With it you cannot re-enter into China mainland to re-activate another duartion of stay (30, 60, 90 days...).
If it is a residence permit, you need to turn to the school to have it extended in time. For the visa valid date, please refer to the Valid Until date on your current visa.

I have a multiple entry L visa that I've overstayed for 15 days. I want to head to Hong Kong and come back on the same visa; it doesn't expire until September 2012. Can I get a fresh 90 days with the same visa after paying the fine or do they cancel it and force me to try to fight for a new one? Can anybody help me with this?? Information is hard to come by about this one Thanks!!

If you are lucky: Pay fine, canceled visa.
If you are soso: Pay fine, banned for some time.
Unlucky: Go straight to jail. It's happened before.
I'd call a big visa agency for advice such as Sinovisa.

I am afraid your L visa will be cancelled, although it doesn't expire until Sep. 2012.
You'd better go to the Public Security Bureau ASAP, since you've already overstayed for 15 days.
You can argue a little as during the long Spring Festival holiday you cannot turn to them in time. For 1 day overstay, you have to pay the fine of 500 rmb. The maximum fine is 5000 rmb.
