Where in Beijing shall we live?
Hello,
We're moving to Beijing in Q1 2011. We're 26 and 30 and want to live close to the action where there will be plenty of expats although I don't want to be segragated completely from the locals - I do want to have the real China experience without feeling alone (i.e. my Chinese obviously won't be up to much when I arrive).
We were advised the CBD but are there any particular buildings that are especially nice? Area's within the CBD that are good? or do you advise somewhere completely different?
Thanks, all suggestions appreciated.

North East, the fumes in CBD will kill you.

Important thing to consider also is where you are working, traffic at peak hour is extremely bad and just bad at other times. I live in the CBD, nice area, has the same fumes as the rest of the city unless Herbie is talking about out past Lido or Shunyi area and then you are living in 'Pleasantville'
Getting to and from work is a key factor in deciding where to live.

As said, if you are not tied to a particular area for where you need to get to every day, there are actually quite a few nice places around CBD (perhaps too many options, leaving you with a headache to have to choose from). What's your budget?

Re: Where in Beijing shall we live?
I think in the north east of the city between 4th and 5th ring road would be better, that's the close to my boyfriend's work.
I thought it might be less polluted there (relative to inner ring road areas)??
Please corrcet me if I'm wrong but this seems to be a purely compound area? i.e no locals just expats? That would be a shame but the apartments seem nicer and it's close to work so if it is less polutted than other areas then we're on to a winner I think.
Anyone live around teh Lido area, what's it like?
Thanks

Re: Where in Beijing shall we live?
There is an area there known as Lidu, if I didn't live in Shuangjing I'd probably live there instead.
It's quite relaxed, nice mix of Chinese/Western food.
There maybe some compounds there but it is definitely not a compound are full of only expats.
You may be thinking of Shunyi, which more closely fits this description, thats just past the N.E. 6th ring.
Shunyi has proper houses like in the west, Lidu is all apartments.

Re: Where in Beijing shall we live?
Whoops, just saw that.
Lido's great, by Beijing standards it's pretty chilled out, you can drive to Sanlitun in about 10 mins outside of rushhour.
Traffic at the main lido intersection can be a bitch around 7PM though (Jiantai Lu?).
Easy access to outer Beijing also.
There's no subway out there if you're into taking the subway.
Fixed.

Can you tell me exactly where are your boyfriend's working site? I think i'll be helpful, I think you can find apartment in Oceanwide Int'l park, it located in just east side of the 4th ring road and Chaoyang Park, 5 minutes to the airport from Siyuan Bridge; 15 minutes to CBD; 20 minutes to Lido Commercial Center, 15 minutes to Lufthansa Area and the 3rd Embassy Area.

There are locals everywhere. Just some places tend to have more expats than others, but even then they will still be way outnumbered by locals.
But I agree with the others - you need to consider we're you'll be working and how you will get to work. If you make a bad choice, you will spend all of your non-work time during weekdays commuting, leaving no time to do other stuff until the weekends. Did you hear, the traffic here has been rated the worst in the world.
