Diagnosed with chronic gastritis but the doctor said it is not serious and it is common?

I had suffered a mild case of acid reflux when I was in America for a few years, but nothing serious. I have been in China for about 8 months now and my stomach has taken a turn for the worst since. I seriously think it is the water or the food. Is anyone else getting constant stomach discomfort? It started out in just my upper left abdomen, but now I feel a strange discomfort in my back(especially my lower back). It would be strange if I had a kidney infection or kidney stones because my blood/liver function test came back totally normal? Anyone else feeling like this and does anyone know what it might be? Could all these symptoms just be from the gastritis alone?
