Words from School Bar

Hello everyone, this is Billy from school, one of the owner.

Recently there has been alot of bad things being said about School. The American Embassy also issued a warning to foreigners in Beijing to stay away from bars. There are a few things I'd like to say: I've been at School almost every time there has been a fight involving foreigners. These are the times I remember:

The first time - A guy that was already drunk wanted to buy another drink, and gave the bartender a fake 100rmb bill. After the bartender refused to accept the money, the guy gave him the middle finger and told him to f*** you.

The second time - Once again, another drunk guy, and also very obviously on drugs. Originally we did not want to welcome him into the bar for these reasons, but we eventually allowed him to enter in hopes that he would not cause any trouble. Only a half hour later, he put his hands on the backside of one of the staff members girlfriends.

The third time - 2 German guys that nobody knew came to School. At first they were really friendly and talked with alot of the regular people at School, but after a few beers, one of them said, "you Chinese and American people are all dog sh*t, inferior races." At the same time, he also raised his right hand to salute the friends of School, ala Adolf Hitler.

The fourth time - Once again a guy who had drank way too much. Beginning by insulting the Chines rock n roll scene (he probably didn't know School has a background with the rock scene and different bands), he went on to curse all Chinese people, making frequent use of the F-word.

All these occurrences should not have ended in physical confrontations, and if we were more tolerant or didn't care about it, we could have just rubbed it off as joking around after drinking too much. Losing our composure resulted in negatively influencing everybody else's happy time. I'd like to once again apologize to all the other people that were present during these times.

In being on one of the two sides on the conflict itself, however, School refuses to apologize.

We have all always had so many non-Chinese friends, and after opening School have gained even more foreign friends. DJ's, travelers, punks, music lovers, regular people. We often have foreign friends who bring us gifts for the bar upon their return to Beijing. Many of the editors for City Weekend and The Beijinger are our friends and often come to School. Talk about drunk, we all know what is drunk and it is a very common thing means to a bar. We always give the drunk guys some special service such as a cup of warm water or a sofa can sleep to the morning. So, the above problems have nothing to do with race or people not being welcomed at School. We welcome people from anywhere in the world to come to School for fun, and together share in the beautiful experiences of music and life.

However, we only welcome friendly people. Any insults or any drunken behavior that negatively influences everybody else will not be tolerated at School. If you want us to respect you, then please respect us. Don't insult us, and don't create a bad atmosphere for all the people having a good time around you. We opened a bar, not a boxing hall. Even though School is small, it's a very happy place.

So, this is what I want to say, just for once. I welcome you all to come have a good time.

Re: Words from School Bar

You run a bar, people get drunk, some drunks are obnoxious, you escort them out. That is how it is done in most places all throughout the world.

According to your account:
You run a bar, people get drunk, some drunks are obnoxious, your patrons beat the crap out of them.

Then you sum up with "no apologies if you disrespect us" ... now that is the sign of a real professional, a true publican if you will. Congrats.

China has more pigs than America has people.

Re: Words from School Bar

Customers of your bar that you sold liquor to got drunk?

Outrageous! No wonder your staff broke bottles over their heads and threw bricks at them.

Thanks for setting the record straight. I'm American, so I will contact the embassy and ask them to remove that slanderous warning.

Re: Words from School Bar

Wow, it really sounds like your bar attracts the very worst of the laowai population of Beijing.

What are the chances that the only obnoxious c**ts in Beijing end up in School?

And in every circumstance, it's their fault.

That's really unlucky for you.

Re: Words from School Bar

fights at bars are just common, there are bigger or smaller fights at sanlitun or other places almost every night, why people only make the fights at School such a big issue?
well, actually there certainly are some anti-foreign kind of Chinese guys walking around the bar and club areas pick up some foreigners to beat up, but the School crew are definitely not that kind of bollocks.
on top of everything, there are some very bad foreign trouble makers deserve to be beaten up.
Oh Beijing, white trash's paradise!

So foreigners are white?

Re: Words from School Bar

School should be a place giving people lessons, isn't it? Don't forget we are famous of Kung-Fu...(Hay-Hoo!) Who cares about the Embassy's b.s., it's in China. Call me when you need reinforcement.(Hay-Hoo again..)

Re: Words from School Bar

Just want to say that I am a loyal patron of school bar because I have found the staff and the community there to be incredibly welcoming and friendly. I've made many friends at this bar, I've learned a great deal of Chinese (not just curse words, for real!), and I've always enjoyed the music and the atmosphere. I've been there several times each week for the last few months and I can confirm Billy's recollection of the fights that have occurred.

The comments on the Beijinger make it seem as though fights at this bar are common and even quietly allowed by the staff. On the contrary, a quick look at the staff behind the bar on a Saturday night will reveal at least one person vigilantly monitoring the crowd. The staff will regularly stop serving patrons who they feel have had enough and on several occasions I have seen several people who were acting a bit too drunk and rowdy to leave. This is by far more common than fights.

Most girls know that when they enter a bar, inevitably they'll cross paths with some drunken idiot with a poorly conceived sense of masculinity. Perhaps it would not be unwise for everyone to simply be cautious in general. There are jackasses of all colors and creeds. Club and bar environments with lots of people are difficult to completely control and things do happen, but that doesn't mean they're welcome or allowable events.

Re: Words from School Bar

Sorry to break up all the "wow I just discovered this site on the worldwide web at 2am, registered and decided to comment about a place I just happen to go to" party... but anyway.

Way to ruin everything Herbie.

Re: Words from School Bar

Wow. So the one-post-wonders of School Bar blatantly admit they're a bunch of racist c*nts who like to gang attack foreigners with bottles and bricks (that's got nothing to do with Kong Fu, btw, if I remember corectly. I would call such people... pussies).

I didn't trust the reports about the beatings much, until now. Thanks for clearing that up, School Bar girls.

Re: Words from School Bar

The staff at School Bar Beijing are racist c**ts that attack foreigners with beer bottles and bricks and are proud of it.

Re: Words from School Bar

You soo right. School Bar Beijing (毒品,小姐)issa cool place. People very friendly. Staff and DJ (法轮功) sometimes like throw brick and bottle at foringer, but also sell good brick of drugs. Me like Smile Get high and f*** they gf in back room. Only 50 RMB! ;)

Go School Bar! Is made by cool Joyside Band man Liu Hao!

Re: Words from School Bar

Oh thank god, it was all a misunderstanding.
I had no idea that all the foreigners who got hit with bricks were asking for it because they were in a bar acting drunk! Not Talking Frankly I'm surprised it seems no one in beijing ever seems to get drunk and obnoxious anywhere EXCEPT school.... Thinking

And thanks to all the random, unrelated users who decided to all register on the same night to back this story up! On The Phone

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Re: Words from School Bar

Typical nongletard behaviour.

Smash people with bricks and bottles, then make up lies to justify it.

You know, this really gets me f-ing irate.

Blatant racism, targeting and beating white people, because these insecure locals can't mingle with an international crowd.

Grow up, you troglodytes. There are millions of perfectly normal Chinese men that are ashamed of your childish, violent tempers and rage mentalities.

Mob beatings, weapons. That's cowardly sh*t.

Re: Words from School Bar

No, don't you see?

The folinges deserved it because they were drunk in a bar that was happy to take their money off them for alcoholic beverages.

So they got the sh*t kicked out of them by a mob with sticks and bricks.

Simple.

What's not to understand?

Don't get drunk in China. Don't mess with Chinese brothers. This is a bar with ties to the rock n roll underworld.

It doesn't matter that rock n rollers here constitute fey, skinny, speccy little boys sipping diet coke through a straw, ok? They have numbers. And bricks.

Beware of the School massive innit?

If this is how you do things then you guys have no business running a bar.

There's always going to be drunks and geared up f***wits(big surprise there eh?!)coming in and the potential for physical confrontations is always there.
Why is the end result someone mobbed by a group with weapons and wailed on well past the point where they're no longer a threat.
There's plenty of other options open to you before it even gets physical.

The place comes across less as a bar, and more so as a motorcycle gangs club house. This is reinforced by OP's own words.

Sometimes the same is different, but mostly, it's the same.

Well, quite clearly, School bar obviously are 'that kind of bollocks.

Can you actually imagine someone getting away with this sh*t in our (civilised) countries? It's a hate crime and you'd be doing time. You probably won't get away with it for too much longer, so better get some Christmas beatings in now, while the sun shines.

Oh dear. Do no 'bad Chinese trouble makers' deserve to be beaten half to death.

This kind of talk could very well incite a mob of naughty foreigners coming down to said bar and exacting some kind of race war revenge. Be careful.

I'm just glad I'm too old to be bothered by any of this juvenile posturing.

Re: Words from School Bar

I was thinking along the same lines.

It's Canada, a rock and roll bar. Cowboys and bikers are knocking back beers while listening to Neil Young. Couples are two-stepping on the dancefloor.

Two Chinese men enter.

They are greeted with suspicious glares.

The Chinese men take a seat and begin talking. They order beers.

One of them comments on the music and laughs.

Record scratch/music stops.

A group of cowboys approaches them. "Are you laughing at Canada? Huh? Laughing at us! REEEEEEE!!!!"

With a scream of outrage the cowboys pummel the Chinese with bottles and bricks.

Re: Words from School Bar

I'm not saying it never happens, but it's not tolerated and the police can't just turn a blind eye to it like they seemingly do here.

The number of stories I've heard where folinges get into scraps with Chineses and the police are against the folinges purely because they aren't Chinese. Then out come the folinge wallets and everyone's on their way so thay can go to hospital to get treatment AFTER a lengthy spell in custody...

It's f-ing ridiculous.

People who used to been there knows School is a good place, friendly people, nice music and tasted alcohol. To the one who NEVER knows the truth, PLEASE always remember DON’T LISTEN TO OTHERS, BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE NOT YOU LISTEN! But there still have some talking nonsense, so must have someone to clear it up.

Now, all people should know what happened in School was soooo common to a bar, it could happens everywhere, every seconds of a day, not even in School, in China. The purpose to open a bar is to provide a place to share happiness. People can drink here, play here, enjoy the music and dance together. No one wanna bad thing happen in a happy time. If do so, please review yourself first. School is the right choice, everyone knows it.
